1935 Philadelphia Mayoral Election
The 1935 Philadelphia mayoral election saw the election of Samuel Davis Wilson. Campaign Wilson was a strong candidate. He had strong persuasive abilities, being able to take opposing positions on a topic while still seeming sincere. For instance, Wilson, as a mayoral candidate, condemned "out of control" federal spending. However, once elected mayor, in 1936 he would later assist in guaranteeing that 40,000 of his constituents were on the Works Progress Administration payroll. Wilson was not completely loyal to the national Republican Party, as he had previously campaigned for Franklin Roosevelt in 1932. Wilson was prone to taking a bare-knuckle approach to political discourse, not straying from referring to his opponents by pejoratives as “dirty rats” and “bare-faced liars.” Having registered 179,000 new voters after the 1932 election cycle, Philadelphia Democrats hoped to finally take the mayoralty. Michael Donohoe
Michael Donohoe (February 22, 1864January 17, 1958) of Philadelphia was a U.S. Representative from Pennsylvania from 1911 to 1915. He was an Irish Catholic Democrat. Biography Michael Donohoe was born in Killeshandra, County Cavan, Ireland. He attended a private classical school, and taught as principal of a national school from January 1885 until October 1886. He immigrated to the United States and settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on November 8, 1886. He worked as a real-estate broker, and engaged in banking and in the manufacture of glassware. Donohoe was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-second and Sixty-third Congresses. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1914. He was a candidate for mayor of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1931. He also served as director of Northwestern General Hospital from 1893 to 1943, and as a trustee of Temple University. Harry Arista Mackey
Harry Arista Mackey (June 26, 1869 – October 17, 1938) was an American college football player and coach, lawyer, and politician. He served as the mayor of Philadelphia from 1928 to 1932. Early life and career Born in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, and a native of Bangor, Pennsylvania, Mackey was educated at the Scranton High School, Keystone Academy, Lafayette College, and the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He played football and baseball at Lafayette, where he captained both squads during the 1889–90 academic year. At Penn, he played football from 1891 to 1893, serving as team captain in 1893. Mackey was admitted to the bar in Philadelphia in 1894. He served as the head football coach at Pennsylvania Military College, now Widener University, in 1894 compiling a 3-2 record, and at the University of Virginia in 1895, where his team went 9-2.
