Walt Disney
Walter Elias Disney (; December 5, 1901December 15, 1966) was an American animator, film producer and entrepreneur. A pioneer of the American animation industry, he introduced several developments in the production of cartoons. As a film producer, he holds the record for most Academy Awards earned and nominations by an individual, having won 22 Oscars from 59 nominations. He was presented with two Golden Globe Special Achievement Awards and an Emmy Award, among other honors. Several of his films are included in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress and have also been named as some of the List of films considered the best, greatest films ever by the American Film Institute. Disney was the first person to be nominated for Academy Awards in six different categories. Born in Chicago in 1901, Disney developed an early interest in drawing. ''Mickey's Choo-Choo'' is a 1929 Mickey Mouse short animated film released by Celebrity Pictures, as part of the ''Mickey Mouse'' film series. Ub Iwerks was the animator. It was the eleventh Mickey Mouse short to be produced, the eighth of that year, and was one of the series of early Disney cartoons that led Mickey Mouse to become a national fad by the end of 1929. Originally in black and white, this cartoon was of the ten Mickey Mouse cartoons colorized by the Walt Disney Company in 1991. Plot The cartoon opens with Mickey piloting a 2-2-0 steam engine, ringing his bell and blowing the engine's whistle. As the engine and his coal tender back to collect a boxcar, the engine rests with Mickey, his railroad engineer, fuelling him, and feeding his engine with coal from the tender. As the engine eats too much coal and burps, Mickey decides to have some spaghetti, until Minnie comes along. ''Permanent Wave'' is a 1929 animated film which is presented by Carl Laemmle and is produced by Walter Lantz. The film, which was written and animated by Walter Lantz, Bill Nolan and Tom Palmer, features Oswald the Lucky Rabbit rescuing a mermaid, whom he has fallen in love with, from his captain on the ship that Oswald is controlling during the film. Copyrighted on July 26, 1929, and released on September 29 the same year, the film was released by Universal Pictures, and thus, is part of Universal series of the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit films. Plot The film opens with Oswald comically rowing on a whale pulling a boat. This boat has a captain inside, who Oswald is a servant to. The captain, whilst on the ship, begins to feel hungry and whistles a note to Oswald, who is originally sleeping, but is woken up by the music note comically dragging him back to the ship by his nose. ''El Terrible Toreador'' is a 1929 animated cartoon produced by Walt Disney Studios in the '' Silly Symphonies'' series. The short's copyright was renewed in 1957, so it will enter the US public domain on January 1, 2025. Plot The film opens somewhere in Spain. A lady is carrying a mug of beer above her head, walking rhythmically to the music of "Carmen". She walks over to a man in a white suit. The man gives her a coin, and she modestly puts it in her shirt. Then the lady does a quick dance in front of the man in the suit. The man tips her, and the money falls into a container on the floor. The lady just ignores him. Outside the building, a toreador is standing. When he sees the lady, with the man in the suit, he is fuming mad. The man in the suit grabs the lady, and soon the two fight over her. This ends with the lady walking away. ''Oil's Well'' is a 1929 short animated film starring Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and produced by Walter Lantz Productions. It is the 2nd Lantz Oswald film and the 54th in the entire series. Plot Oswald and a lady cat named Kitty are canoeing in a river. While the rabbit rows, Kitty plays a guitar and dances. One day, their ride is roughen by rocks protruding from the water, causing Oswald to lose his oar, and Kitty to lose her guitar. They are, however, able to make it safely to shore. Oswald then converts their boat into a car where they begin moving by road. After such a trip, Oswald takes Kitty home which is a tall condo building. Before Kitty goes inside, Oswald asks Kitty if they should be married to each other as well as having a dozen children. Kitty considers this a possibility and agrees with Oswald. Race Riot (film)
''Race Riot'' is a 1929 animated short film which is presented by Carl Laemmle and was produced by Walter Lantz, who would go on to produce and create the cartoon character Woody Woodpecker with his wife, Gracie Lantz. The film, which both its story and animation was composed by Walter Lantz, 'Bill' Nolan and Tom Palmer, features Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, as he attempts to win a horse race with his horse. The horse's coughs were done by Walter Lantz. The film was recorded with Western Electric apparatus, which was an early sound-on-film system. This sound system was used in another Oswald short film entitled ''Hurdy Gurdy'', which involves Oswald being substituted as a street performer's dancer after the original one was comically swallowed up by Oswald's chewing gum, or more specifically, bubblegum. ''Mickey's Follies'' is a Mickey Mouse short animated film first released on August 28, 1929, as part of the ''Mickey Mouse (film series), Mickey Mouse'' film series. It was directed by Ub Iwerks and Wilfred Jackson, with music by Carl Stalling. It was produced in black and white by Walt Disney Animation Studios, The Walt Disney Studio and released to theaters by Pat Powers (businessman), Celebrity Productions. It was the tenth Mickey Mouse short to be produced, the seventh of that year. This cartoon is the first in which Mickey sings, and the song -- "Minnie's Yoo-Hoo"—was used as the opening theme for all of the ''Mickey Mouse'' cartoons from ''The Jazz Fool'' (1929) to ''Mickey's Steam Roller'' (1934). ''Ratskin'' is a 1929 animated cartoon released by Columbia Pictures starring Krazy Kat. It is the first cartoon to be released by Columbia Pictures and the first ''Krazy Kat'' cartoon released with sound. Plot The short features Krazy Kat hunting for turkey. He shoots with his gun what he thinks is turkey, but turns out to be a Native American instead. The Indian chases Krazy and gets caught. An anamorphic pole ties Krazy up, and the Indians light a fire below him. Krazy manages to escape from the Indians, but then the Indians start shooting arrows at him. Krazy finds his gun and uses it as a record player, and the Indians start dancing. A female Indian wants to kiss Krazy, but he hits her with his gun instead. All of the Indians get angry and try to get Krazy, but Krazy escapes from the crowd, dismantles his gun, and uses the Indians (now huddled in a circle, not realizing Krazy had escaped) as a record player. ''Weary Willies'' is a 1929 animated short produced by George Winkler which stars Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. The film is also the penultimate Oswald cartoon created during the Winkler period. Plot summary Oswald is a penniless vagabond who comes out of one of the train cars after it makes a stop. As he steps out of the train, Oswald sees a guard passing by. Therefore, he hurries back inside and shuts the door, but because Oswald's baggage (a sack tied to a stick) is left outside, the suspicious guard decides to inspect the train. When the guard opens the door and peeps in, Oswald, coming out from another exit, kicks the officer in and makes a run for it. Wondering on the countryside, the hungry Oswald sees a homeless bear camping under a tree. The two meet and befriend each other. They then start to fry an egg using the camp fire and other limited equipment that they have. Jungle Jingles
''Jungle Jingles'' is a 1929 animated film produced by Winkler Productions and part of the '' Oswald the Lucky Rabbit'' series. Plot Oswald is riding on an ostrich, venturing the African jungles. Suddenly, his ostrich decides to make a stop, causing him to be thrown forward. While the disturbed Oswald lets out his dissatisfaction, the large bird lays an egg. The egg hatches, but the offspring chooses to go a separate path rather than to stay with its mother. Just nearby, an elephant is playing golf using his trunk as a club, and coconuts as balls. The elephant executes a shot but the coconut just veers away from the hole. After missing the next several shots without even scoring once, the frustrated golfer starts striking the coconuts at random directions. One of them strikes Oswald's ostrich, prompting that bird to quickly flee the scene. Oswald too is hit and is dazed for a few seconds. ''Sleepy Holler'' is a 1929 silent animated short film by Winkler Pictures, and stars Krazy Kat. It is the character's last silent film. It is also the last film of the series to be distributed by Paramount Pictures. Plot Krazy Kat is a hired baby-sitter who looks after three kittens owned by a hefty nagging woman. His duties include rocking the offspring to sleep, make breakfast, and wash the chinaware. All of which he does simultaneously while in his chair. One day, he is so worn out that he takes a snooze in his seat. In his dream, Krazy finds himself in a blank room. After looking around for a few moments, he is amazed to access a bed hidden in one of the walls. He then puts on a nightgown and gets in the bed.
