1929 Singapore Open
The 1929 Singapore Open, also known as the 1929 Singapore Open Singles Badminton Championship, took place from 19 October – 16 November 1929 at the Old Chinese Chin Woo Athletic Association Hall in City Hall with the final been played at the Singapore Chinese Girls' School Hall in Somerset, Singapore. The ties were played over a month with the first round ties being played on the 19th of October and the final was played on the 16th of November. The championship started as a men's singles competition before the rest of the disciplines were added in the subsequent editions. E.J. Vass won the inaugural championship when he defeated See Gim Hock in two straight games to win the men's singles title. Origins Badminton was first introduced in Singapore by the British and was initially played among the British upper-class residing in Singapore. 1930 Singapore Open
The 1930 Singapore Open, also known as the 1930 Singapore Badminton Championships, took place from 5 July – 27 September 1930 at the S.V.C Drill Hall in City Hall, Singapore. The ties were played over a few months with the first round ties being played on the 5th of July and the last tie (the men's doubles final) was played on the 27th of September. There were no women-related competitions being held due to the lack of entries. Defending men's singles champion, E.J. Vass won his second consecutive title after he bested See Gim Hock in a thrilling three sets battle to win the men's singles title. Lim Chek Heng and Seah Eng Liat became the competition first men's doubles champion when they defeated Lim Boon Guan and Wee Eng Siang in yet another three setter. Singapore Open (badminton)
The Singapore Open is a badminton event that has been held in Singapore annually since 1929. Badminton World Federation categorized Singapore Open as one of the seven BWF World Tour Super 500 events in the BWF events structure since 2018. In 2023, the tournament will be upgraded to a Super 750 event. In 1929, the Singapore Badminton Association (SBA) was established to promote the sport and organise competitions. Its first official annual open championships was held in that same year with the best players chosen to represent Singapore in the regional tournaments. In 1957, it became an open invitation championships and was held annually until 1973. In 1987–1989, the tournament was known as the Konica Cup, an invitation championships exclusively for Asian players, and in 1990, for the first time entered the International Badminton Federation Grand Prix circuit. Singapore Badminton Association (abbreviation: SBA) is the national governing body for badminton in Singapore. It governs, encourages and develops the sport throughout the country. Founded in 1929, the SBA is an affiliate of the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC). It is also a member of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) and Badminton Asia, which was formerly known as the Badminton Asian Confederation. As of 2021, the SBA has a total of 32 member clubs across the country. It closely liaises with the member clubs to provide support to the club and league structures. Aw Boon Haw
Aw Boon-Haw (; 1882 in Rangoon, British Raj – 1954 in Hawaii), OBE, was a Chinese entrepreneur and philanthropist best known as founder of Tiger Balm. He was a son of Hakka herbalist Aw Chu-Kin, with his ancestral home in Yongding County, Fujian Province, China. Career Aw was born to Chinese herbalists at Rangoon Road on 1882 under the British colonial government. In 1926, due to problems with the British Colonial government at the time, Aw migrated to Malaysia and expanded their business overseas to South East Asia, where he cofounded the business with his brother. Aw used cartoon commercialisation to promote their Balm product to any potential customer as well as at any public celebration. In the 1920s, his main factory, Eng Aun Tong, was set up at 89 Neil Road, Chinatown, Singapore.
