1929 Queensland State Election
Elections were held in the Australian state of Queensland on 11 May 1929 to elect the 72 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. In this electionIrene Longmanbecame the first woman to both stand and be elected into the Queensland Parliament. The Labor government was seeking its sixth continuous term in office since the 1915 election; it would be Premier William McCormack's second election. His main opponent was the Country and Progressive National Party (CPNP), led by Arthur Edward Moore. The term had not gone well for McCormack's government, including a railway lock-out in 1927 which pitted the Labor Party against the union movement, restrictive financial policies and attempts to sell off state-owned enterprises, as well as suggestions of corruption which later came to be known as the Mungana affair. Legislative Assembly Of Queensland
The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). There is approximately the same population in each electorate; however, that has not always been the case (in particular, a malapportionment system - not, strictly speaking, a gerrymander - dubbed the ''Bjelkemander'' was in effect during the 1970s and 1980s). Wilfred Adams Russell
Wilfred Adams Russell (1874 – 8 January 1932), was an Australian politician. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life and education Russell was born in Queensland in 1874 and educated in New South Wales, where he later acquired pastoral and agricultural interests. Pastoralism In 1909 he acquired an interest in Dalmally Station near Roma and took up residence there in 1910. He further extended his pastoral interests with the acquisition of properties at Cunnamulla and Jimbour Station. Jimbour was purchased from Charles Whippell. Title was transferred to Russell in January 1925. He pioneered the use of motorised livestock transport in the 1920s. Politics Like the Bells before him, Russell of Jimbour became involved in local politics. James Alexander Charles Kenny (6 December 1898 – 24 July 1954) was a plumber and politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Kenny was born in Cairns, Queensland, the son of James Kenny Snr. and his wife Rosena Cathleen (née Bollard). He was educated at Cairns State School and served in the First Australian Imperial Force in 1917–1918 and was wounded in France in 1918. After World War I he was engaged in mixed businesses at Peeramon, Malanda, and Mareeba. After state politics he was the prices officer in Cairns and for his last six years conducted the business of plumber. Henry Joseph Ryan (1873 – 17 January 1943) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Ryan was born at Ballarat, Victoria, the son of Thomas Ryan and his wife Margaret (née O'Brien). He was educated at the Christian Brothers College in Ballarat and on arrival in North Queensland took up mining. After his political career he was a businessman in Brisbane. On 4 May 1898 he married Kate Butler in Gympie and together had one son. Cook is an electoral district in Queensland, Australia. Cook covers the vast Cape York Peninsula north of Cairns, including the resort town of Port Douglas and the Torres Strait Islands.
