1927 VFA Season
The 1927 Victorian Football Association season was the 49th season of the Australian rules football competition. The premiership was won by the Coburg Football Club, after it defeated Brighton by 34 points in the Grand Final on 15 October. It was the club's second VFA premiership, achieved in only its third season of senior competition, and was the second in a sequence of three premierships won consecutively from 1926 until 1928; and, it came after the team was undefeated in the home-and-home season. Association membership In the off-season, the Brunswick Football Club was re-admitted to the Association, after having withdrawn from the competition in late 1926 in protest at suspensions given to two of its players. Coburg Football Club
The Coburg Football Club, nicknamed the Coburg Lions, is an Australian rules football club based in Coburg, a northern suburb of Melbourne, and currently playing in the Victorian Football League (VFL). It is based at Coburg City Oval since 1915, which was partly redeveloped in 2020. Coburg has historically been a proud club and has won 6 VFA/VFL premierships with the most recent premiership in 1989. From 2001 to 2013 the club was aligned with the Richmond Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL), acting as its reserves team. Prahran Football Club
Prahran Assumption Football Club (), nicknamed The Two Blues, is an Australian rules football club based at Toorak Park in Orrong Road between High Street and Malvern Road, Armadale, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The club is currently in Division 1 of the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA). 1927 VFL Grand Final
The 1927 VFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the Collingwood Football Club and Richmond Football Club, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne on 1 October 1927. It was the season's grand final of the Victorian Football League, staged to determine the premiers for the 1927 VFL season. Background Before the 1927 season, Collingwood had last won a premiership in 1919, and had suffered grand finals losses in 1920, 1922, 1925 & 1926. Great dissatisfaction brewed amongst the supporters, and at a meeting at the Collingwood Town Hall in March 1927 the committee was put under enormous pressure to end the seven-year premiership drought. In a remarkable response, the committee sacked the in-form Charlie Tyson as captain and player, and gave the captaincy to Syd Coventry. Elsternwick Park
Elsternwick Park (currently known by its sponsored name Sportscover Arena) is an Australian rules football and cricket stadium in Brighton, a suburb of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia. The name also refers to the wider parkland in which the main oval is located. The ground is the administrative and primary central playing base of the Victorian Amateur Football Association. History Cricket The cricket ground was built on part of the site of the former Elsternwick Racecourse by the Elsternwick Cricket Club, a club which had been established in 1901 through an amalgamation of three local cricket teams. Recorder Cup
The J. J. Liston Trophy is awarded annually to the best and fairest senior player in the Victorian Football League (formerly the Victorian Football Association). It is named after J.J. Liston, a businessman, civic leader and sports administrator who was fundamental in advancing sport in Australia, particularly Australian Rules Football and Soccer. History The first award for the Association best and fairest player was the Woodham Cup, named after committeeman Alf Woodham, which was first awarded in 1923. The Woodham Cup was renamed the Recorder Cup, named after the Association's official match-day publication, in 1926. Starting from 1933, a second award, the V.F.A. Ernie Martin
Ernest John 'Snowy' Martin (3 June 1903 – 7 September 1996) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Carlton and Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1920s. Recruited from Carlton District, Martin was a wingman and could only manage to play four games in three years at Carlton. He spent the 1926 and 1927 seasons with Coburg in the VFA and participated in back to back premierships. His performances in 1927 made him the first Coburg player to win a Recorder Cup The J. J. Harry Kerley
Henry Charles "Harry" Kerley (12 December 1894 – 23 January 1987) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Collingwood and St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The fourth son of John Kerley (1855-1939), and Sarah Ann Kerley (née Hillier, 1860-1941), Henry Charles Kerley was born on 12 December 1894. He married Rose Gertrude Robinson (1900-1987) in 1922. They had two children: Rosie Eleanor Kerley (1923-2010), later Mrs Henry Ellis Sevior, and Betty Pauline Kerley (1925-2005), later Mrs Alfred James Wright. Keith Forbes
Keith MacKenzie Forbes (28 May 1906 – 7 September 1996) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Coburg in the Victorian Football Association (VFA), and for Essendon, North Melbourne (as captain-coach), and Fitzroy in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of Donald Forbes, and Sarah Jane Forbes, née MacPhail, Keith MacKenzie Forbes was born on 28 May 1906. He married Dorothy Viola Brown on 25 November 1935. Motordrome (Melbourne)
The Motordrome, also known as the Olympic Park Speedway, the Melbourne Speedway or the Victorian Speedway, was a former speedway and Australian rules football ground located approximately on the site of the present day Melbourne Rectangular Stadium in Olympic Park in Melbourne, Victoria. The ground was primarily a speedway track, but also hosted football matches. History Melbourne Carnivals Pty. Ltd, a company established in 1923 by Jack Campbell and Jim DuFrocq, developed and leased a large site known as the Amateur Sports Ground from the Crown with the help of local entrepreneur John Wren. Geelong Association Football Club
Geelong (Association) Football Club was an Australian rules football club which played in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) from 1922 until 1927. History In late 1921, the VFA granted the Geelong & District Junior Football Association permission to establish a new senior club to be admitted to the Association. The new club was called the Geelong Football Club; it was typically referred to as Geelong (Association) or Geelong (A.) when required to distinguish it from the Geelong Football Club of the same name which was affiliated with the Victorian Football League. Camberwell Football Club
Camberwell Football Club was an Australian rules football club which formed around the mid-1880s, with a published match in 1886 and competed in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) between 1926 and 1990. Nicknamed the Cobras, Camberwell wore blue, white and red club colours. They were based in the Melbourne suburb of Camberwell. History Camberwell FC competed in the Victorian Junior Football Association in 1888, finishing sixth on the ladder, 8th in 1890 and 8th in 1891. At the 1895 VJFA – AGM, the competition was reduced from 20 teams to 12 teams and Camberwell was one of the clubs that was not admitted and it appears that Camberwell FC went into recess for a number of years, before joining the Eastern Suburbs Football Association in 1899.
