1926–27 PHL Season
The 1926–27 season was the first year for the Prairie Hockey League (PHL). The PHL was, in essence, a reorganisation of the Western Hockey League after it folded the previous year. Five teams each played 32 games. Prairie Hockey League
The Prairie Hockey League (PHL) was a Canadian professional ice hockey league in Alberta and Saskatchewan that was created following the demise of the Western Hockey League in 1926. It operated for two seasons. The creation of the league was announced in February 1926, with teams in Regina, Moose Jaw, Brandon, and Winnipeg. By the time the first season began, Brandon and Winnipeg had dropped out. Five WHL teams—the Calgary Tigers, Edmonton Eskimos, Saskatoon Sheiks, Regina Capitals, and the Moose Jaw Warriors—played in the league's first season. Leading the PHL was president Walter E. Seaborn of Moose Jaw. In the first season, the Calgary Tigers were declared the league champions when the Saskatoon Sheiks refused to continue their playoff series after complaining about the officiating in the first game. Ernie Anderson
Ernest Earle Anderson (November 12, 1923 – February 6, 1997) was an American radio and television personality, horror host, and announcer. Known for his portrayal of "Ghoulardi", the host of late night horror films on WJW Channel 8 on Cleveland television from 1963 to 1966, he worked as an announcer for the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) television network from the late 1970s until the mid-1990s. He is the father of filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson, whose production entity is known as the Ghoulardi Film Company. Early life and career Anderson was born in Boston and grew up in Lynn, Massachusetts, the son of Emily (Malenson) and Ernest C. Anderson. Anderson planned to go to law school, but instead joined the U.S. Navy during World War II to avoid being drafted. 1927–28 PHL Season
The 1927–28 season was the second and last season of the Prairie Hockey League (PHL). Two of the league's three remaining teams played 26 games while the third team played 28. Regular season Two teams, the Edmonton Eskimos and Calgary Tigers, folded after the previous season leaving only three teams for this, the last PHL season. The Saskatoon Sheiks, who had finished second overall the previous season, finished first overall for this one. 1925–26 WHL Season
The 1925–26 WHL season was the fifth and last season for the now defunct Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL), which was renamed Western Hockey League (WHL) at the start of the season due to one of its Canadian teams, the Regina Capitals, moving to Portland, Oregon in the United States and being renamed the Portland Rosebuds. Six teams played 30 games each. At season's end, some of the teams reorganised to create a semi-pro league called the Prairie Hockey League that lasted for two seasons. The WHL was the last league other than the National Hockey League to contest for the Stanley Cup. Off-season Regina's team folded, and a Portland club was formed and the Regina players transferred to it. There was discussions of moving the Edmonton team to Regina but it stayed in Edmonton. The new New York Americans bought Joe Simpson, John Morrison and Roy Rickey from Edmonton, but Edmonton would have enough talent left to win the WHL title. List Of NHL Seasons
This is a list of seasons of the National Hockey League (NHL), a professional ice hockey league, since its inception in 1917. The list also includes the seasons of the National Hockey Association (NHA), the predecessor organization of the NHL, which had several teams that would continue play in the NHL.Only two franchises, Montreal and Toronto, still exist from the founding of the league. The Quebec Bulldogs, which suspended after the last NHA season, returned to play in the third NHL season, although they were considered founding members of the NHL. The league would move the team to Hamilton in 1920 and dissolve the team in 1925. The original Ottawa Senators would continue in the league until 1935, where, after one season in St. Louis as the St. Louis Eagles, the franchise was dissolved by the league. Fern James Headley (March 2, 1900 — September 28, 1956) was an American-born Canadian professional ice hockey defenseman who played 30 games in the National Hockey League for the Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins during the 1924–25 season. John "Crutchy" Morrison
John William "Crutchy" Morrison (March 4, 1895 - March 14, 1956) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player who played 18 games in the National Hockey League during the 1925–26 season with the New York Americans. The rest of his career, which lasted from 1913 to 1932, was spent in a variety of other leagues, including the Western Canada Hockey League, where he played for the Edmonton Eskimos. With Edmonton he played in the 1923 Stanley Cup Finals, and scored the team's only goal. Playing career Born in Selkirk, Manitoba, Morrison played senior hockey for the Selkirk Fishermen, starting in 1913. In 1915, he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force for the First World War. Before being sent overseas, he played one season for the Winnipeg 61st Battalion to capture the Allan Cup in 1916. Norman "Dutch" Gainor
James Norman "Norm, Dutch" Gainor (April 10, 1904 – January 16, 1962) was a Canadian ice hockey professional forward. Gainor was most notable for playing on the Boston Bruins' 1928 "Dynamite Line" with Cooney Weiland and Dit Clapper, one of the earliest "named" forward lines in National Hockey League (NHL) history. Gainor started his NHL career with the Boston Bruins, later playing for the Ottawa Senators, New York Rangers and Montreal Maroons. His career started in 1927 and would retire in 1935. Johnny Gottselig
Johannes “Johnny” Gottselig (russian: Иван Гоцелиг) (June 24, 1905 – May 15, 1986) was a professional ice hockey left winger who played 16 seasons for the Chicago Black Hawks of the National Hockey League (NHL) between 1928 and 1945. He was the second player born in the Russian Empire to play in the NHL. Emil Iverson was the first European-born Chicago Blackhawks head coach in 1932 (Copenhagen, Denmark) and John became the second approximately 15 years later. He was the second European-born captain of a cup-winning team in the league's history (Scotland-born Charlie Gardiner was the first in 1934). Western Canada Hockey League
The Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL), founded in 1921, was a major professional ice hockey league originally based in the prairies of Canada. It was renamed the Western Hockey League (WHL) in 1925 and disbanded in 1926. The WCHL's Victoria Cougars were the last non-NHL team to win the Stanley Cup when they won the 1925 Stanley Cup Finals over the NHL's Montreal Canadiens.
