1926 Men's European Water Polo Championship
The 1926 Men's European Water Polo Championship was the 1st edition of the event, organised by the Europe's governing body in aquatics, the Ligue Européenne de Natation. The event took place between 18 and 22 August in Budapest, Hungary as an integrated part of the 1926 European Aquatics Championships. European Water Polo Championship
The European Water Polo Championship is a sport competition for national water polo teams, currently held biannually and organized by the Ligue Européenne de Natation (LEN), the governing European aquatics federation. There are both men's and women's competitions. The first European Water Polo Championship was held in 1926 in Budapest, Hungary, with just a men's competition. The women for the first time competed in 1985 (Oslo, Norway) for the European title. The water polo tournament was part of the European Aquatics Championships up to and including 1997, and from 1999 the event was separated and got its own independent tournament. Márton Homonnai
Márton Homonnai (5 February 1906 – 15 October 1969), also known as Márton Hlavacsek, was a Hungarian water polo player who won two gold and one silver medals at the 1928, 1932 and the 1936 Summer Olympics; his team finished fifth in 1924. During his career Homonnai played 115 international matches, often alongside his brother Lajos. His daughter Katalin Szőke became an Olympic swimmer. During World War II Homonnai was a policeman and a member of the Arrow Cross Party, which supported the Nazis. After the war, fearing prosecution (he was sentenced to death in absentia), he flew via Germany and Brazil to Argentina, where he died in 1969. János Wenk
János Wenk (24 April 1894 - 17 October 1962) was a Hungarian water polo player and backstroke swimmer who competed in the 1912 Summer Olympics and in the 1924 Summer Olympics. Born in Csaca, He was part of the Hungarian water polo team, which competed in the 1912 tournament as well as twelve years later in the 1924 tournament. At the 1928 tournament he was a reserve player and did not compete in a match. In 1912 he also competed in the 100 metre backstroke event, but he was eliminated in the first round. He died in Budapest. József Vértesy
József Vértesy (19 February 1901 – 21 December 1983) was a Hungarian water polo player who competed in the 1924 Summer Olympics, in the 1928 Summer Olympics, and in the 1932 Summer Olympics. Born in Zombor, Austria-Hungary (today Sombor, Serbia) and died in Budapest, Hungary. He first competed at the Olympics in 1924. As a member of the Hungarian water polo team he finished seventh. He played one match. Also he was part of the Hungarian water polo team which won the silver medal in 1928 and the gold medal 1932. In Amsterdam at the 1928 Summer Olympics he played all four matches and scored seven goals. Four years later in Los Angeles he played all three matches.
