1921 Penrith And Cockermouth By-election
The 1921 Penrith and Cockermouth by-election was a parliamentary by-election held for the British House of Commons constituency of Penrith and Cockermouth in Cumberland on 13 May 1921. Vacancy The by-election was caused by the resignation of the sitting Unionist Member of Parliament (MP), the Right Hon. James Lowther. Lowther was retiring as Speaker of the House of Commons and was created Viscount Ullswater later in 1921. Candidates The election was straight fight between Major-General Cecil Lowther, the brother of the retiring MP, soldier and former big game hunter for the Unionists and Levi Collison, an art printer from Preston in Lancashire for the Asquithian Independent Liberal Party. Major-general (United Kingdom), Major General Sir (Henry) Cecil Lowther, (1 January 1869 – 1 November 1940) was a British general and Conservative Party (UK), Conservative politician, big-game hunter and adventurer. Career Born in Ampthill, Bedfordshire, he was the fourth son of William Lowther (diplomat), William Lowther. Educated at Clifton College, he was commissioned into the Scots Guards as a second lieutenant on 29 December 1888, promoted to Lieutenant (British Army and Royal Marines), lieutenant on 13 April 1892, and to Captain (BARM), captain on 24 June 1899. When the Second Boer War broke out in October 1899, the 1st battalion of the Scots Guards departed Ireland for South Africa to join up with the 1st Guards Brigade, with Lowther appointed adjutant. 1922 United Kingdom General Election
The 1922 United Kingdom general election was held on Wednesday 15 November 1922. It was won by the Conservative Party, led by Bonar Law, which gained an overall majority over the Labour Party, led by J. R. Clynes, and a divided Liberal Party. This election is considered one of political realignment, with the Liberal Party falling to third-party status. The Conservative Party went on to spend all but eight of the next forty-two years as the largest party in Parliament, and Labour emerged as the main competition to the Conservatives. The election was the first not to be held in Southern Ireland, due to the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty on 6 December 1921, under which Southern Ireland was to secede from the United Kingdom as a Dominion – the Irish Free State – on 6 December 1922. Major the Hon. Christopher William Lowther (18 January 1887 – 7 January 1935) was a British Conservative Party politician, the elder son of James Lowther, 1st Viscount Ullswater. Lowther was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was commissioned into the Duke of Yorks Own Loyal Suffolk Hussars in 1909. David Lloyd George, 1st Earl Lloyd-George of Dwyfor, (17 January 1863 – 26 March 1945) was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1916 to 1922.
