1920 Argyll By-election
The 1920 Argyllshire by-election was a parliamentary by-election held for the British House of Commons constituency of Argyllshire (UK Parliament constituency), Argyllshire on 10 March 1920. Vacancy The by-election was caused by the appointment of the sitting Liberal Party (UK), Coalition Liberal Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), MP William Sutherland (Scottish politician), Sir William Sutherland as a Lord of the Treasury. This was an office of appointment under the Crown which enabled Sutherland to take up the post of Scottish Liberal Whip (politics), whip but under the constitutional requirements of the day it meant he had to resign and fight a by-election. Highland Land League (1909)
The Highland Land League founded in 1909 was a left wing political party active in Scotland in the early twentieth century. It was separate from, although a conscious imitation of, the late 19th century Highland Land League. It was founded in Glasgow, in 1909 as a political party. This organisation was a broadly left-wing group that sought the ''restoration of deer forests to public ownership'', ''abolition of plural farms'' and the ''nationalisation of the land''. Also they resolved to ''resolutely defend crofters facing eviction by their landlords'' and they ''supported home rule for Scotland''. During the First World War (1914 to 1918) politicians made lavish promises about reform which would follow the war, and of course many croftsmen lost their lives in the war itself. Argyllshire
Argyll (; archaically Argyle, in modern Gaelic, ), sometimes called Argyllshire, is a historic county and registration county of western Scotland. Argyll is of ancient origin, and corresponds to most of the part of the ancient kingdom of on Great Britain. Argyll was also a medieval bishopric with its cathedral at Lismore, as well as an early modern earldom and dukedom, the Dukedom of Argyll. It borders Inverness-shire to the north, Perthshire and Dunbartonshire to the east, and—separated by the Firth of Clyde—neighbours Renfrewshire and Ayrshire to the south-east, and Buteshire to the south. 1918 United Kingdom General Election
The 1918 United Kingdom general election was called immediately after the Armistice with Germany which ended the First World War, and was held on Saturday, 14 December 1918. The governing coalition, under Prime Minister David Lloyd George, sent letters of endorsement to candidates who supported the coalition government. These were nicknamed "Coalition Coupons", and led to the election being known as the "coupon election". The result was a massive landslide in favour of the coalition, comprising primarily the Conservatives and Coalition Liberals, with massive losses for Liberals who were not endorsed. Nearly all the Liberal MPs without coupons were defeated, including party leader H. H. Asquith. It was the first general election to include on a single day all eligible voters of the United Kingdom, although the vote count was delayed until 28 December so that the ballots cast by soldiers serving overseas could be included in the tallies.
