The 1916–17 season was the 43rd season of competitive football played by Rangers. Overview Rangers played a total of 41 competitive matches during the 1916–17 season. They finished third in the Scottish League after winning 24 of the 38 league matches and collecting a total of 53 points (11 behind league winners Celtic). The Scottish Cup was not competed for this season, as the Scottish Football Association had withdrawn the tournament due to the outbreak of the First World War. Bert Manderson
Bert Manderson (9 May 1893 – 27 April 1946) was an Irish footballer who played as a right-back for Rangers and Ireland. Playing career Manderson made his Rangers debut in a 1–1 draw with Aberdeen on 27 March 1915. He had joined Rangers from Glenavon for £150. He previously had spells at Cliftonville and Belfast Celtic. He went on to make 370 league appearances (452 in total) in 12 seasons with the club, winning seven Scottish league titles. Manderson left Rangers to join Bradford Park Avenue in 1927. Bill Paterson (footballer, Born 1898)
William Paterson (5 March 1897 – 31 July 1970) was a Scottish professional footballer who played as a centre forward. He began his career in Scotland in the 1910s and switched to English football twice. In 1926, he joined the American Soccer League where he led the league in scoring in the fall 1929 season. Career Known as either Bill or Willie, Paterson spent time with Cowdenbeath and Rangers in Scotland before moving to Derby County of The Football League in 1921. He spent two seasons with Derby, where he was relegated from the First Division in 1921, before rejoining Cowdenbeath. He also spent time with Armadale. He then played with Coventry City during the 1925–26 season. In the fall of 1926, he moved to the United States where he signed with the Springfield Babes of the American Soccer League. George Philip (footballer)
George Gregory Philip (1890 – 1968) was a Scottish footballer who played mainly as a centre forward between 1910 and 1921. Philip was born in Newport-on-Tay and began his playing career with Dundee, for whom he played in the Scottish Football League, usually as a centre-half (a goalkeeper of the same name was also in the squad in the same period). After a strong 1913–14 season, scoring 15 goals in 37 appearances, Sunderland paid a then club-record fee of £2,000 to sign Philip in 1914. Robert Fleming Archibald (6 November 1894 – 27 November 1966) was a association football, footballer who played in the Football League for Barnsley F.C., Barnsley and Stoke City F.C., Stoke City. Archibald played for a number of Scottish clubs before joining Stoke City F.C., Stoke City in 1925. Thomas Cairns (30 October 1892 – 30 November 1967) was a Scottish footballer who played for Bristol City, Peebles Rovers, St Johnstone, Rangers, Bradford City and Scotland. Adam Scott Mathieson Duncan (2 November 1888 – 3 October 1976) was a Scottish football player and manager, who played as an outside right. He made over 100 appearances for Rangers, played in England for Newcastle United, winning the Football League title in 1908–09. He also had three spells with Dumbarton, and played for Cowdenbeath and guested for Celtic. As a manager, he led Hamilton Academical and Cowdenbeath before going to England, where he managed Manchester United and then Ipswich Town, the latter for 18 years. A midfielder is an outfield position in association football. Midfielders may play an exclusively defensive role, breaking up attacks, and are in that case known as defensive midfielders.
