Zinovy Yefimovich Gerdt (russian: Зино́вий Ефи́мович Гердт, which is a pseudonym, his real name being Zalman Afroimovich Khrapinovich (За́лман Афро́имович Храпино́вич); 21 September 1916 in Sebezh, Russian Empire – 18 November 1996) was a Soviet and Russian actor. He was awarded the People's Artist of the USSR in 1990. Biography Early life and education Gerdt was born Zalman Afroimovich Khrapinovich on September 21, 1916 in the city of Sebezh in the Pskov Oblast. His father Afroim Yakovlevich Khrapinovich worked for some time in a fabrics shop as a clerk, and later as a salesman. Mother Rakhil Isaakovna was a housewife. His father died quite early, his mother stayed with four children: two boys and two girls, of which Zinovy was the youngest. Ada Tschechowa (russian: Ада Михайловна Чехова, 9 September 1916 – 28 January 1966) was a Russo-German actress and music manager. Life Ada Mikhailovna Chekhova was born to esteemed actors Olga Chekhova, Olga and Michael Chekhov on 9 September 1916 in Moscow, Russian Empire, Russia. In 1921, her family moved to Berlin, where she grew up. From a young age, Ada followed in the path of her parents and grew an interest in becoming a theater actress, which led her to attending the Staatliche Schauspielschule in Berlin and private lessons with Walter Franck. In April 1935, she tried out for and was accepted for an Austrian production of ''The Pompadour'' and ''The Empress's Favourite'' the following year. Until the end of World War II she played in two more movies, and then in ''Secret of a Marriage'' in 1951. Evolution of the Arabic digit In the Brahmi numerals, beginning, various Indians wrote a digit 9 similar in shape to the modern closing question mark without the bottom dot. The Kshatrapa, Andhra and Gupta started curving the bottom vertical line coming up with a -look-alike. The Nagari continued the bottom stroke to make a circle and enclose the 3-look-alike, in much the same way that the sign @ encircles a lowercase ''a''. As time went on, the enclosing circle became bigger and its line continued beyond the circle downwards, as the 3-look-alike became smaller. Soon, all that was left of the 3-look-alike was a squiggle. The Arabs simply connected that squiggle to the downward stroke at the middle and subsequent European change was purely cosmetic. Princess Irene Galitzine ( ka, ირინა გალიცინი; russian: Ирен Голицына; 22 July 1916 – 20 October 2006) was a Russian-Georgian fashion designer whose best known creation was the palazzo pyjama. Early life Princess Irene Galitzine was born in 1916 in Tiflis, Russia Empire (now Tbilisi, Georgia), to Prince Boris Galitzine (1878–1958), an official of the imperial guard who belonged to the aristocratic Galitzine family, whose origins date back to 1200 and a Georgian mother, Princess Nina Lazareff (Lazarashvili, 1888–1957). However, her family were forced to flee the country following the 1917 October Revolution, and took up residence in Italy. Kyra Knopmuss; Kyra Vayne (29 January 1916 in St Petersburg, Russia – 12 January 2001 in London; Cyrillic form ) was a Russian-born British opera singer. Biography The Russian-born soprano Kyra Vayne came to London in 1924. From the late 1930s to the late 1950s she sang in London and elsewhere in revue and variety, and later in opera. Reviewers acknowledged that she had a fine voice but for various reasons her career was only intermittently successful. In ''A Voice Reborn'' she tried to explain the reasons for this: sometimes "personal problems intruded on, and destroyed my professional life – or rather, I stupidly allowed them to", and opportunities, were missed especially in Italy. "Wherever I went I was the perpetual outsider." She was born Kyra Knopmuss in St Petersburg just before the Revolution, and in 1924 the family fled to London.
