1915 Wigtownshire By-election
The 1915 Wigtownshire (UK Parliament constituency), Wigtownshire by-election was held on 12 February 1915. The UK Parliamentary by-elections, by-election was held due to the incumbent Conservative Party (UK), Conservative MP, John Dalrymple, 12th Earl of Stair, John Dalrymple, succeeded as the 12th Earl of Stair. It was won by his uncle, the Conservative Party (UK), Conservative candidate Hew Hamilton Dalrymple, who was unopposed. At the time of the election, John Dalrymple was a prisoner of war in Germany, having been captured by the Germans during the Great Retreat in 1914. He remained a prisoner until 1917 when he was repatriated for medical reasons, due to degradation in his eyesight. Wigtownshire (UK Parliament Constituency)
Wigtownshire, was a Scottish constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of Great Britain from 1708 to 1801 and of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1801 to 1918. It was represented by one Member of Parliament. Creation The British parliamentary constituency was created in 1708 following the Acts of Union, 1707 and replaced the former Parliament of Scotland shire constituency of Wigtownshire which had previously been represented by two Shire Commissioners. The first British general election in Wigtownshire was in 1708. In 1707–08, members of the 1702–1707 Parliament of Scotland were co-opted to serve in the 1st Parliament of Great Britain. John Dalrymple, 12th Earl Of Stair
John James Hamilton Dalrymple, 12th Earl of Stair, (1 February 1879 – 4 November 1961), styled Viscount Dalrymple between 1903 and 1914, was a Scottish soldier and Conservative Party, later Unionist Party, politician. Military and political career The son of John Dalrymple, 11th Earl of Stair, Dalrymple was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Scots Guards on 16 February 1898, and promoted to lieutenant on 11 October 1899. He fought in the Second Boer War, where he took part in the march to occupy the Boer capitals Bloemfontein (March 1900) and Pretoria (June 1900), and was present at the successive Battles of Diamond Hill (11-12 June 1900) and Bergendal (21-27 August 1900). Following the end of hostilities in early June 1902, he left Cape Town on board the ''SS Orotava'', and arrived at Southampton the next month. He later fought in the First World War. Earl Of Stair
Earl of Stair is a title in the Peerage of Scotland. It was created in 1703 for the lawyer and statesman John Dalrymple, 2nd Viscount of Stair. Dalrymple's father, James Dalrymple, had been a prominent lawyer; having served as Lord President of the Court of Session, he was created a baronet, of Stair in the County of Ayr, in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia in 1664, and in 1690 he was raised to the Peerage of Scotland as Lord Glenluce and Stranraer and Viscount of Stair. The son, John Dalrymple, actively supported William III's claim to the throne and served as Secretary of State for Scotland. However, he was forced to resign after he authorised the massacre of Glencoe of 1692. He was made Lord Newliston, Glenluce and Stranraer and Viscount of Dalrymple, at the same time as he was given the earldom, also in the Peerage of Scotland. Hew Hamilton Dalrymple
Sir Hew Hamilton Dalrymple, (27 September 1857– 11 July 1945) was Unionist Party (Scotland), Unionist Party Member of Parliament for Wigtownshire (UK Parliament constituency), Wigtownshire. Biography Hew Hamilton Dalrymple was born on 27 September 1857, the third son of John Dalrymple, 10th Earl of Stair and was educated at Harrow School. In 1877, he joined the Royal Scots Fusiliers as a second lieutenant, subsequently rising to the rank of Major. In 1908, he was appointed to the rank of Brigadier in the Royal Company of Archers. Throughout his life, he had an interest in the arts. In April 1912 he became one of the Trustees of the National Galleries of Scotland, becoming chairman of the Trustees in 1930. He would remain chairman until his resignation from the post in 1944. He was the unopposed candidate for the seat of Wigtownshire at the 1915 Wigtownshire by-election, by-election in 1915. Wigtownshire
Wigtownshire or the County of Wigtown (, ) is one of the historic counties of Scotland, covering an area in the south-west of the country. Until 1975, Wigtownshire was an administrative county used for local government. Since 1975 the area has formed part of Dumfries and Galloway for local government purposes. Wigtownshire continues to be used as a territory for land registration, being a registration county. The historic county is all within the slightly larger Wigtown Area, which is one of the lieutenancy areas of Scotland and was used in local government as the Wigtown District from 1975 to 1996. Wigtownshire forms the western part of the medieval lordship of Galloway, which retained a degree of autonomy until it was fully absorbed by Scotland in the 13th century.
