1915 Toronto Municipal Election
Municipal elections were held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on January 1, 1915. Tommy Church was elected mayor defeating Jesse O. McCarthy. Toronto mayor Incumbent mayor H.C. Hocken chose not to run for re-election. Two prominent members of the Board of Control ran to replace him: Tommy Church and Jesse O. McCarthy, with Church the victor. As with most races of the period, it was also a contest between the two newspapers with the ''Toronto Daily Star'' supporting McCarthy and the ''Toronto Telegram'' supporting Church. ;Results :Tommy Church - 26,041 : Jesse O. Joseph Gibbons (Toronto)
Joseph Gibbons (died February 17, 1946) was a municipal politician in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He was born on a farm outside of Waterloo, Ontario and moved to Toronto in the 1890s. There he found worked as a streetcar driver. He first piloted the horse-drawn streetcars up Yonge Street and then served for fifteen years as a driver on the Belt Line. He became active in the driver's union, rising to a leadership position. He was elected to Toronto City Council, and served there for four years before being elected to the powerful Board of Control. On council he was the foremost representative of organized labour in city politics. His main campaign was for public ownership of utilities. He was central to the creation of the Toronto Transit Commission, bringing the previously privately owned streetcars under city control. David Spence (Canadian Politician)
David Spence (January 25, 1867 – February 13, 1940) was an Irish-born Canadian politician, businessman and army officer. Spence was born in Markethill, County Armagh, Ireland and was educated at a state school before immigrating to North America in 1896. After spending a year in Pittsburgh he moved to Toronto where he established a wholesale fruit and commission business. He served as an alderman on Toronto City Council from 1910 to 1916 and was instrumental in winning approval for the construction of the Prince Edward Viaduct. During World War I he helped form The Irish Regiment of Canada and was one of its officers but was not permitted to go overseas to fight because of his age. Spence was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada as a Conservative in the 1921 federal election. Parkdale is a neighbourhood and former village in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, west of downtown. The neighbourhood is bounded on the west by Roncesvalles Avenue, on the north by the CP Rail line where it crosses Queen Street and Dundas Street. It is bounded on the east by Dufferin Street from Queen Street south, and on the south by Lake Ontario. The original village incorporated an area north of Queen Street, east of Roncesvalles from Fermanagh east to the main rail lines, today known as part of the Roncesvalles neighbourhood. Brockton Village
Brockton Village is a former town, and now the name of a neighbourhood, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It comprises a section of the old Town of Brockton which was annexed by the City of Toronto in 1884. The town encompassed the area from Bloor Street on the north, Dufferin Street on the east, High Park on the west and ranged from Queen Street, along Roncesvalles Avenue, Wright Avenue and Dundas Street to the south. Trinity-Bellwoods is an inner city neighbourhood in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is bounded on the east by Bathurst Street, on the north by College Street, on the south by Queen Street West, and by Dovercourt Road on the west. Louis Singer
Louis M. Singer, K.C., (1885–1959 ) was a Toronto lawyer and the second Jewish candidate to win election to Toronto City Council, the first being Newman Leopold Steiner. Singer was born in Austria in 1885 and immigrated to Canada with his family when he was three years old. He attended Jarvis Collegiate Institute in Toronto and had to pay for his own schooling by selling books and, later, real estate. Lacking enough money to attend university, he sold insurance for a year and then enrolled at Osgoode Hall Law School while continuing to sell fire insurance at night. He graduated in 1908 with first class honours and the gold medal. He established the law office of Singer and Singer and was elected to Toronto City Council representing Ward 4 in the 1914 municipal election. The Fashion District (also known as the Garment District) is a commercial and residential district in Downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Kensington Market is a distinctive multicultural neighbourhood in Downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The Market is an older neighbourhood and one of the city's most well-known.
