The 1915 Glasgow Central by-election was held on 16 July 1915. The by-election was held due to the incumbent Conservative MP, Charles Dickson, becoming the Lord Justice Clerk. Glasgow Central (UK Parliament Constituency)
Glasgow Central is a constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom (at Westminster). In its current form, the constituency was first used at the 2005 general election, but there was also a ''Glasgow Central'' constituency that existed from 1885 to 1997. The sitting MP is Alison Thewliss of the Scottish National Party (SNP), who was first elected in May 2015. This constituency was also the seat of the former Conservative Prime Minister Bonar Law, who was the shortest-serving UK Prime Minister of the twentieth century. Charles Dickson, Lord Dickson
Charles Scott Dickson FRSE LLD (13 September 1850, Glasgow – 5 August 1922) was a Scottish Unionist politician and judge. Life Charles was born in Glasgow the son of Dr John Robert Dickson. His elder brother was James Douglas Hamilton Dickson. Educated at the High School of Glasgow, the University of Glasgow and the University of Edinburgh he was admitted to the bar as an advocate in 1877. He was an unsuccessful candidate for Kilmarnock Burghs in 1892, and Glasgow Bridgeton in 1895 and 1897. He was elected to and sat for Bridgeton from 1900 until 1906, when he was defeated. He then sat for Glasgow Central from March 1909 until his appointment as a judge in 1915. He rose to be Solicitor General for Scotland from 14 May 1896 to 1903 and as Lord Advocate from 1903 to 1905. From 1908 to 1915, he served as the elected Dean of the Faculty of Advocates. He was appointed a Privy Counsellor in 1903. Lord Justice Clerk
The Lord Justice Clerk is the second most senior judge in Scotland, after the Lord President of the Court of Session. Originally ''clericus justiciarie'' or Clerk to the Court of Justiciary, the counterpart in the criminal courts of the Lord Clerk Register, the status of the office increased over time and the Justice-Clerk came to claim a seat on the Bench by practice and custom. This was recognised by the Privy Council of Scotland in 1663 and the Lord Justice Clerk became the effective head of the reformed High Court of Justiciary in 1672 when the court was reconstituted. The Lord Justice Clerk now rarely presides at criminal trials in the High Court, with most of his or her time being spent dealing with civil and criminal appeals. Unionist Party (Scotland)
The Unionist Party was the main centre-right political party in Scotland between 1912 and 1965. Independent of, although associated with, the Conservative Party in England and Wales, it stood for election at different periods of its history in alliance with a small number of Liberal Unionist and National Liberal candidates. Those who became members of parliament (MPs) would take the Conservative Whip at Westminster as the Ulster Unionists did until 1972. At Westminster, the differences between the Scottish Unionist and the English party could appear blurred or non-existent to the external casual observer, especially as many Scottish MPs were prominent in the parliamentary Conservative Party. Sir John MacLeod, 1st Baronet
Sir John Mackintosh MacLeod, 1st Baronet (5 May 1857 – 6 March 1934) was a Scottish MP for the Unionist Party. He sat for Glasgow Central from a by-election in 1915 to 1918, and for Glasgow Kelvingrove from 1918 to 1922. He was elected in 1918 as a supporter of David Lloyd George's coalition government. He was the second son of Rev. Norman MacLeod. He had an younger brother, the Scottish international rugby union footballer William MacKintosh MacLeod, and six sisters. McLeod was created a baronet in the 1924 Prime Minister's Resignation Honours. He married Edith Fielden in 1888.
