The 1913 Londonderry City by-election was a Parliamentary by-election held on 30 January 1913. The constituency returned one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, elected by the first past the post voting system. Vacancy The sitting Unionist MP, the James Hamilton succeeded his father on his death as the Duke of Abercorn, so vacated his seat in the House of Commons to take up his seat in the House of Lords. He had been MP here since 1900. Londonderry City was a parliamentary constituency in Northern Ireland. It returned one Member of Parliament (MP) to the United Kingdom House of Commons, elected by the first past the post voting system. Boundaries and boundary changes This constituency was the parliamentary borough of Londonderry (or Derry) in County Londonderry. It was an original constituency represented in the first UK Parliament when the Acts of Union 1800 took effect on 1 January 1801, inheriting the boundaries and franchise of the Londonderry City constituency of the abolished Irish House of Commons. In 1922 it was combined with North Londonderry and South Londonderry, to form the Londonderry county constituency. Hercules Pakenham
Colonel Hercules Arthur Pakenham (17 February 1863 – 28 March 1937) was a unionist politician in Northern Ireland. A member of the Pakenham family headed by the Earl of Longford, he was the eldest son of Lieutenant-General Thomas Pakenham, by Elizabeth Clarke, daughter of William Clarke, of New York City. He was educated at Eton and the Royal Military College Sandhurst from which he was commissioned as an officer in the Grenadier Guards in 1883. He held posts as aide de camp to the Governor General of Canada from 1886 to 1888, and to the Governor General of India from 1888 to 1893. The following year he was promoted to captain on 12 September 1894. In 1898 he was promoted to the rank of major in the 4th (Militia) Battalion of the Royal Irish Rifles. He acted as private secretary to the Governor of Victoria from 1898 to 1900, and in June 1902 was again seconded from his regiment for service under the Colonial Office. The 1914 Londonderry City by-election was a Parliamentary by-election held on 30 November 1914. The constituency returned one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, elected by the first past the post voting system. Liberal Sir James Brown Dougherty was elected unopposed. Dougherty was the last Liberal MP elected in Ireland. Vacancy James Hamilton, Marquis of Hamilton had been elected as a Unionist in the 1910 general election, facing Nationalist opposition. David Cleghorn Hogg
David Cleghorn Hogg JP (1840 – 22 August 1914) was a Protestant businessman and politician, originally from Scotland, but established resident in Victoria Park, Derry, County Londonderry. Career David Hogg and his partner, Charles Mitchell, built a five-storey shirt factory in Great James Street in 1898. since converted into apartments. He became a magistrate. On 7 January 1911, he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of County Londonderry. He remained Lord Lieutenant until his death. Political career James Hamilton, Marquis of Hamilton succeeded to the Dukedom of Abercorn, resulting in the 1913 Londonderry City by-election. Hogg was nominated as a Liberal and received the support of the Catholic clergy, despite his religion. He defeated the Unionist candidate Hercules Arthur Pakenham by 57 votes. Sir John Randolph Leslie, 3rd Baronet (Irish: ''Sir Seaghán Leslaigh''; 24 September 1885 – 14 August 1971), commonly known as Sir Shane Leslie, was an Irish-born diplomat and writer. He was a first cousin of Sir Winston Churchill. In 1908, Leslie became a Roman Catholic and supported Irish Home Rule. December 1910 United Kingdom General Election
The December 1910 United Kingdom general election was held from 3 to 19 December. It was the last general election to be held over several days and the last to be held before the First World War. The election took place following the efforts of the Liberal government to pass its People's Budget in 1909, which raised taxes on the wealthy to fund social welfare programs. The 1909 budget was only agreed to by the House of Lords in April 1910 after the January general election in which the Liberals and the Irish Parliamentary Party gained a majority. The Government called a further election in December 1910 to get a mandate for the Parliament Act 1911, which would prevent the House of Lords from permanently blocking legislation linked to money bills ever again, and to obtain King George V's agreement to threaten to create sufficient Liberal peers to pass that act (in the event this did not prove necessary, as the Lords voted to curtail their own powers). Duke Of Abercorn
The title Duke of Abercorn () is a title in the Peerage of Ireland. It was created in 1868 and bestowed upon James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Abercorn, James Hamilton, 2nd Marquess of Abercorn. Although the Dukedom is in the Peerage of Ireland, it refers to Abercorn, West Lothian, and the Duke also bears four titles in Peerage of Scotland and two in the Peerage of Great Britain, and is one of only three peers who have titles in those three peerages.
