The 1912 United States presidential election in Iowa took place on November 5, 1912, as part of the 1912 United States presidential election. Voters chose 13 representatives, or electors, to the Electoral College, who voted for president and vice president. Iowa was won by Princeton University President Woodrow Wilson ( D– New Jersey), running with governor of Indiana Thomas R. Marshall, with 37.64% of the popular vote, against the 26th president of the United States Theodore Roosevelt ( P–New York), running with governor of California Hiram Johnson, with 32.87% of the popular vote and the 27th president of the United States William Howard Taft ( R– Ohio), running with Columbia University President Nicholas Murray Butler, with 24.33% of the popular vote. The Progressive Party was a third party in the United States formed in 1912 by former president Theodore Roosevelt after he lost the presidential nomination of the Republican Party to his former protégé rival, incumbent president William Howard Taft. The new party was known for taking advanced positions on progressive reforms and attracting leading national reformers. The party was also ideologically deeply connected with America's indigenous radical-liberal tradition. After the party's defeat in the 1912 presidential election, it went into rapid decline in elections until 1918, disappearing by 1920. Franklin Pierce
Franklin Pierce (November 23, 1804October 8, 1869) was the 14th president of the United States, serving from 1853 to 1857. He was a northern Democrat who believed that the abolitionist movement was a fundamental threat to the nation's unity. He alienated anti-slavery groups by signing the Kansas–Nebraska Act and enforcing the Fugitive Slave Act. Conflict between North and South continued after Pierce's presidency, and, after Abraham Lincoln was elected president in 1860, Southern states seceded, resulting in the American Civil War. Pierce was born in New Hampshire. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1833 until his election to the Senate, where he served from 1837 until his resignation in 1842.
