The 1909 Yale Bulldogs football team was an American football team that represented Yale University as an independent during the 1909 college football season. The team finished with a 10–0 record, shut out every opponent, and outscored them by a total of 209 to 0. Howard Jones (American football coach), Howard Jones was the team's head coach, and Ted Coy was the team captain. There was no contemporaneous system in 1909 for determining a College football national championships in NCAA Division I FBS, national champion. However, Yale was retroactively named as the national champion by the Billingsley Report, Helms Athletic Foundation, Houlgate System, National Championship Foundation, and Parke H. Davis. Howard Jones (American Football Coach)
Howard Harding Jones (August 23, 1885 – July 27, 1941) was an American football player and coach who served as the head coach at Syracuse University (1908), Yale University (1909, 1913), Ohio State University (1910), the University of Iowa (1916–1923), Duke University (1924) and the University of Southern California (1925–1940), compiling a career record of 194–64–21. His 1909 Yale team, 1921 Iowa team, and four of his USC teams ( 1928, 1931, 1932, 1939) won national championships. Jones coached USC in five Rose Bowls, winning all of them. Before coaching, Jones played football at Yale (1905–1907), where he played on three national title-winning teams. Henry Hobbs
Henry Homer Hobbs (May 10, 1887 – June 28, 1931) was an American football player and coach. He played college football at Yale University and was selected as a consensus All-American at the tackle position in 1909. He also served as the head coach at Amherst College from 1910 to 1913, compiling a 13–17–2 record with the Lord Jeffs. During World War I, Hobbs was active with the Commission for Relief in Belgium and the American Field Service. When the United States entered the war, he served in the United States Army and was put in charge of the procurement, storage, and distribution of lubricating oils for the American Expeditionary Forces. The Plain (West Point)
The Plain is the parade field at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. The flat terrain of the Plain is in contrast to the varied and hilly terrain of the remainder of the campus. The Plain rises approximately above the Hudson River and has been the site of the longest continually occupied U.S. Army garrison in America since 1778. In its early years, the entire academy was located on the Plain and it was used for varying activities ranging from drill and mounted cavalry maneuvers to an encampment site for summer training to a sports venue.
