Bill Warner (American Football)
William Jay Warner (January 24, 1881 – February 12, 1944) was an American football player and coach. Warner graduated from Cornell University in 1903 and was a member of the Sphinx Head Society. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1971. Following his playing career at Cornell University, Warner was the head football coach at Cornell University, the University of North Carolina, Colgate University, Saint Louis University, and the University of Oregon. He also coached football at Sherman Institute—now known as Sherman Indian High School—in Riverside, California. Warner was the brother of famed football coach Pop Warner. Robison Field is the best-known of several names given to a former Major League Baseball park in St. Louis, Missouri. It was the home of the St. Louis Cardinals of the National League from April 27, 1893 until June 6, 1920. The season ran from Saturday, September 25, until Thanksgiving Day, November 25, although a few games were played on the week before. The 1909 season was also one of the most dangerous in the history of college football. The third annual survey by the ''Chicago Tribune'' at season's end showed that 10 college players had been killed and 38 seriously injured in 1909, up from six fatalities and 14 maimings in 1908.
