1908–09 Ottawa Hockey Club Season
The 1908–09 Ottawa Hockey Club season was the club's 24th season, third in the Eastern Canada Amateur Hockey Association. Ottawa won the league championship and took over the Stanley Cup from the Montreal Wanderers. Team business This was the first season that the Club played as professionals as the amateur clubs dropped out of the league. There was turnover in Ottawa as Harvey Pulford and Alf Smith (ice hockey), Alf Smith retired and Tom Phillips (ice hockey), Tom Phillips left. Ottawa would replace these players with Edgar Dey, Billy Gilmour (ice hockey), Billy Gilmour and Albert Kerr, Albert 'Dubby' Kerr from Toronto Professional Hockey Club, Toronto Professionals. Pete Green (ice Hockey)
Peter Green or Greene (March 13, 1868 – September 22, 1934) was a Canadian professional ice hockey coach and trainer with the Ottawa Hockey Club/Ottawa Senators. Green won ten Stanley Cup titles in his time with Ottawa, four as a trainer, and six as a coach. Green also was a trainer with the Ottawa Football Club and in lacrosse. Career Peter Green began his athletic career with the Ottawa Capitals field lacrosse team as a player in 1890. He would later become their trainer and coach. He coached the Ottawa Rough Riders football team from 1900 to 1903, during which they won two Canadian championships. In 1905, Green was hired by the Ottawa Hockey Club or "Silver Seven" as a trainer. In 1908, he was promoted to head coach to replace Alf Smith, who left to join the Kenora Thistles. This documents the records and playoff results of seasons completed by the original-era Ottawa Senators (original), Ottawa Senators ice-hockey, ice hockey club, officially known as the Ottawa Hockey Club from the period of 1883 until 1934. The first reference to the name 'Senators' is in 1901, although the nickname only apparently came into common use in the 1910s. For the period 1903–1906, the club is best known as the 'Silver Seven', although this may be a later invention. History The club began as a community-based sports club, founded in 1883. In 1889, the club joined the Ottawa Amateur Athletics Club, an offshoot of the Ottawa Amateur Athletics Association. Until the latter 1890s, the association's logo was on the club's jerseys. The Stanley Cup is a trophy awarded annually to the playoff champion club of the National Hockey League (NHL) ice hockey league. It was donated by the Governor General of Canada Lord Stanley of Preston in 1892, and is the oldest professional sports trophy in North America. The 1909 ECHA season was the fourth and final season of the Eastern Canada Hockey Association (ECHA). Teams played a twelve-game schedule. Cyclone Taylor
Frederick Wellington "Cyclone" Taylor, MBE (June 23, 1884 – June 9, 1979) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player and civil servant. A cover-point and rover, he played professionally from 1906 to 1922 for several teams, and is most well-known for his time with the Vancouver Millionaires of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA). Acknowledged as one of the first stars of the professional era of hockey, Taylor was recognized during his career as one of the fastest skaters and most prolific scorers, winning five scoring championships in the PCHA. He also won the Stanley Cup twice, with Ottawa in 1909 and Vancouver in 1915, and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1947. Born and raised in Southern Ontario, Taylor moved to Manitoba in 1906 to continue his hockey career. Fred Lake (ice Hockey)
Frederick Edgar Lake (March 12, 1883 – November 29, 1937) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He was one of the first professional players and he played 181 games in various professional and amateur leagues, including the National Hockey Association, Eastern Canada Amateur Hockey Association, and International Professional Hockey League. Amongst the teams he played with were the Ottawa Senators and Toronto Ontarios. He won two Stanley Cups in 1909 and 1911 with Ottawa. Bruce Stuart
Charles Bruce Stuart (November 30, 1881 – October 28, 1961) was a Canadian amateur and professional ice hockey forward who played for the Quebec Bulldogs, Ottawa Senators, Montreal Wanderers, Portage Lakes Hockey Club, Pittsburgh Victorias and Pittsburgh Professionals from 1899 to 1911. Stuart is considered to be an early version of a power forward, a forward who combines size and physical play with scoring ability, in hockey history. Stuart won the Stanley Cup with both the Ottawa Senators and the Montreal Wanderers.
