1908–09 ECHA Season
The 1909 ECHA season was the fourth and final season of the Eastern Canada Hockey Association (ECHA). Teams played a twelve-game schedule. The Ottawa Hockey Club would win the league championship with a record of ten wins, two losses and take over the Stanley Cup. Eastern Canada Amateur Hockey Association
The Eastern Canada Amateur Hockey Association (ECAHA) was a men's amateur – later professional – ice hockey league in Canada that played four seasons. It was founded on December 11, 1905 with the top clubs from two other leagues: four from the Canadian Amateur Hockey League (CAHL) and two from the Federal Amateur Hockey League (FAHL). It was formed to maximize the revenues of a now popular spectator sport and help these amateur teams cope with professionalism in the sport. The league would shed its amateur status for the 1908 season, leading to the split between Canadian amateur ice hockey teams playing for the Allan Cup, and the professionals playing for the Stanley Cup. Alf Smith (ice Hockey)
Alfred Edward Smith (June 3, 1873 – August 21, 1953) was a Canadian amateur and professional ice hockey forward who played for the Ottawa Senators ( ''Silver Seven'') and Kenora Thistles. He had six younger brothers who played senior-level hockey in Ottawa: Daniel (b. 1876), Jack (b. 1878), Harry (b. 1883), Tommy (b. 1886), Billy (b. 1889) and George Smith (b. 1891). He was captain of the Ottawa Hockey Club and also coached the team. He also played rugby football with the Ottawa Rough Riders, and, in 1902, won a championship with teammate in hockey as well Bouse Hutton. Hockey career Alf Smith began his hockey career playing for the Ottawa Hockey Club (Ottawa HC) of the AHAC in the 1890s. In 1897 he retired from the Ottawa HC. Montreal Wanderers
The Montreal Wanderers were an amateur, and later professional, ice hockey team based in Montreal. The team played in the Federal Amateur Hockey League (FAHL), the Eastern Canada Amateur Hockey Association (ECAHA), the National Hockey Association (NHA) and briefly the National Hockey League (NHL). Ottawa Senators (original)
The Ottawa Senators were an ice hockey team based in Ottawa, which existed from 1883 to 1954. The club was the first hockey club in Ontario, a founding member of the National Hockey League (NHL) and played in the NHL from 1917 until 1934. The club, which was officially the Ottawa Hockey Club (Ottawa HC), was known by several nicknames, including the ''Generals'' in the 1890s, the ''Silver Seven'' from 1903 to 1907 and the ''Senators'' dating from 1908.The first mention of 'Senators' as a nickname was in 1901, in the ''Ottawa Journal.'' Haileybury Comets
The Haileybury Hockey Club (also known as the ''Haileybury Comets'' or ''Haileybury Miners'') were an ice hockey based in Haileybury, Ontario, which existed from 1906 to 1915. The team is notable for being a founding member of the National Hockey Association (NHA), the predecessor to the National Hockey League (NHL). The Cobalt Silver Kings of Cobalt, Ontario, were a professional ice hockey club established in 1906. Cobalt, Ontario
Cobalt is a town in Timiskaming District, Ontario, Canada. It had a population of 989 at the 2021 Census. In the early 1900s, the area was heavily mined for silver; the silver ore also contained cobalt. By 1910, the community was the fourth highest producer of silver in the world. Mining declined significantly by the 1930s, together with the local population. In late 2017 one publication referred to Cobalt as a ghost town, but the high demand for cobalt, used in making batteries for mobile devices and electric vehicles, is leading to great interest in the area among mining companies. Joe Malone
Maurice Joseph Malone (February 28, 1890 – May 15, 1969) was a Canadian professional ice hockey centre. He played in the National Hockey Association (NHA) and National Hockey League (NHL) for the Quebec Bulldogs, Montreal Canadiens, and Hamilton Tigers from 1910 to 1924. Known for his scoring feats and clean play, Malone led the NHL in goals and points in 1918 and 1920, and the NHA in goals twice, in 1913 and 1917 (in a tie). He won the Stanley Cup with Quebec in 1912 and 1913. One of the first hockey superstars of the early 20th century, Malone holds or shares 13 NHL records that have stood unbroken over a century after his retirement, including seven that have never been matched. Harry Hyland
Harold Macarius Hyland (January 2, 1889 – August 8, 1969) was a Canadians, Canadian professional ice hockey forward (ice hockey), forward who played for the Montreal Wanderers, New Westminster Royals, and Ottawa Senators (original), Ottawa Senators. He was a star in the early years of professional hockey. Hyland played in the inaugural 1917–18 NHL season, where he and Joe Malone scored five goals on the NHL's first day of play on December 19, 1917, setting three NHL rookie records that remain unbroken since. Federal Amateur Hockey League
The Federal Amateur Hockey League (FAHL) was a Canadians, Canadian men's Senior ice hockey, senior-level ice hockey league that played six seasons, from 1904 to 1909. The league was formed initially to provide a league for teams not accepted by the rival Canadian Amateur Hockey League (CAHL). The FAHL's membership changed in each of its six seasons of operation. Ottawa Senators (FHL)
The Ottawa Senators were a professional ice hockey team based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The team only existed for the final 1909 season of the Federal Hockey League (FHL). The team was composed mainly of ex- Ottawa "Silver Seven/Senators" Hockey Club players—a team that played in the competing Eastern Canada Hockey Association (ECHA) that same season. The club was formed to help boost the rivalry between the FHL and the ECHA so as to foster a Stanley Cup challenge. Toronto Professional Hockey Club
The Toronto Professional Hockey Club was a professional ice hockey team in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was Toronto's first professional ice hockey team, founded in 1906. The team played the 1906–07 season in exhibition games against other professional teams. In 1908, the team was one of the founders of the Ontario Professional Hockey League (OPHL).
