1908 VFL Grand Final
The 1908 VFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the Carlton Football Club and Essendon Football Club, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne on 26 September 1908. It was the 11th annual Grand Final of the Victorian Football League, staged to determine the premiers for the 1908 VFL season. The match, attended by 50,261 spectators, was won by reigning premiers Carlton by a margin of 9 points, marking that club's third premiership victory and third in succession. Right to challenge This season was played under the amended ''Argus'' system. Carlton was the minor premier, and Essendon had finished second. The teams both qualified for this match by winning their semi-finals matches. If Essendon had won this match, Carlton would have had the right to challenge Essendon to a rematch for the premiership on the following weekend, because Carlton was the minor premier. Billy Payne (footballer)
William John Payne (25 December 1881 – 22 July 1967) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Carlton in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the early 1900s. Recruited from Footscray via Numurkah, Payne was a half-back flanker and played in Carlton's losing 1904 VFL Grand Final in his debut season. He was one of Carlton's stars in their 1906 VFL Grand Final premiership, being awarded best on ground honours. Fred Elliott (footballer)
Frederick Clifford "Pompey" Elliott (7 April 1879 – 3 August 1960) was an Australian rules footballer in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Fred was the first VFL player to reach 200 games and was elected to the Carlton Hall of Fame in 1988. Family Fred was born in Carlton with the name Frederick Clifford Saggers to William Constantine Saggers (1824-1880) and Florence Mary Woodliffe Willcox (1857-1929), who had married in 1876. He was only a few months old when his 56 year old father died. Fred's mother was only 23 years old at the time and quickly re-married. The new husband's name was Frederick Giddons Anson Elliott (1859-1920). Baby Fred was given his stepfather's surname. He married Florence May Windsor (1879-1959) at St Thomas's Essendon on 26 September 1906. The newly married couple went to live at 1 Pascoe Vale Road, Moonee Ponds. Charlie Hammond
Charles William Hammond (19 March 1886 – 4 December 1936) was an Australian rules footballer who played with the Carlton Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Hammond is notable as the only footballer in history to play in five Carlton premiership sides. Family The son of Thomas Hammond, and Ann Hammond, née Williams, Charles William Hammond was born at Collingwood, Victoria on 19 March 1886. George Topping
George Thomas Dungate Topping (27 August 1881 – 17 November 1958) was an Australian rules footballer and umpire in the Victorian Football League. Playing career Originally recruited from Carlton Juniors, Topping made his debut for the Carlton Football Club in Round 10 of the 1902 season. Playing mainly in the forward line, he was a good marker and accurate kicker with a good sense of where to go to get the ball. His firepower was vital in Carlton's hat-trick of premierships from 1906 to 1908, with totals of 25, 26, and 16 goals in those respective seasons. Harvey Kelly
Harvey "Duff" Kelly (24 March 1883 – 30 July 1944) was an Australian rules footballer who played with South Melbourne and Carlton in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Western Australian Harvey Kelly played most of his games at centre half forward and was noted for his long, accurate drop and place kicks. He started out at South Melbourne in 1902 but after just one season returned home and joined East Fremantle. A member of East's 1904 premiership team, he crossed to rivals South Fremantle in 1905. His brothers Ernie and Otto, who both had VFL careers, played beside him at South Fremantle. While in Western Australia, Kelly played two first-class cricket matches for the state, as a bowler. Martin Gotz
Martin Gustav Gotz (26 February 1883 – 13 August 1967) was an Australian rules footballer in the early 20th century who most notably played for Carlton in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Gotz started his senior career at Port Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) in 1902 before heading to Western Australia the following year to play for Perth Football Club. His form for Perth however was ordinary and the club cleared Gotz to East Fremantle Football Club.Atkinson, p. 79. At East Fremantle however, Gotz became a leading player, playing on the half back flank in East Fremantle's 1904 premiership team. Jim Marchbank
James Alexander Marchbank (17 August 1878 – 6 January 1959) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Carlton in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Jim Marchbank was born James Alexander Hanson, the second son of James Trickett Hanson (a Danish immigrant) and Janet Scott. After his father's death in 1880, his mother married John William Marchbank and James inherited the Marchbank name. The family lived in Woods Point and worked in the timber industry. Marchbank was already 24 when he came to Carlton but he soon established a place in the side as both a ruckman and centre half forward. He participated in Carlton's 1904 Grand Final loss and took a break from the sport in 1905 as the Woods Point recruit was struggling to adapt to life in Melbourne. Alex Lang
Alex Lang (12 March 1888 – 9 July 1943) was an Australian rules footballer who played with the Carlton Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Despite being a three-time premiership player, Lang will be remembered by history as the joint record holder for the longest player ban received from the tribunal. Football Recruited by coach Jack Worrall in 1905, Lang debuted for Carlton in the opening round of the following season. He played as a rover, winning premierships in his first three years at the club and in 1909 was voted by ''The Australasian'' newspaper as the most 'Outstanding player in the VFL'.
