The 1908 Newport (Shropshire) by-election was held on 14 May 1908. The by-election was held due to the death of the incumbent Conservative MP, William Kenyon-Slaney. William Kenyon-Slaney
William Slaney Kenyon-Slaney PC (24 August 1847 – 24 April 1908) was an English sportsman, soldier and politician. Biography Kenyon-Slaney was born in Rajkot in Gujarat in British India, the son of Captain William Kenyon of the 2nd Bombay Cavalry and Frances Catherine Slaney, daughter of Robert A. Slaney of Shropshire. Upon the death of Robert Slaney in 1862 the Kenyon family inherited the Slaney family estate of Hatton Grange near Shifnal in Shropshire and the Kenyon family name was changed to Kenyon-Slaney. Kenyon-Slaney was educated at Eton College and briefly at Christ Church, Oxford, where he matriculated in 1865. In November 1867, he left Oxford and received a commission into the 3rd battalion of the Grenadier Guards. Kenyon-Slaney was a noted sportsman and played first-class cricket for the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), as well as playing at county level for Shropshire between 1865 and 1879. Beville Stanier
Sir Beville Stanier, 1st Baronet (12 June 1867 – 15 December 1921) was a British politician and landowner. Stanier was born in Ambleside, Lancashire in 1867, the son of Francis Stanier and Caroline Stanier, sister of General William Clive Justice (1835–1908). He was educated privately then studied at the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester, and in 1894 married Constance Gibbons, daughter of the Reverend Benjamin Gibbons. They had four children, including Alexander Stanier, a prominent Army officer. Stanier farmed a 4,000 hectare estate at Peplow Hall, which had been purchased by his father in the 1870s. He entered public life in 1902, as a member of Shropshire County Council, holding this post until 1912. Following the death of the incumbent William Kenyon-Slaney, Stanier was elected as a Unionist Member of Parliament for Newport, Shropshire in a 1908 by-election. Francis Neilson
Francis Neilson (26 January 1867 – 13 April 1961) was an accomplished actor; playwright, stage director; political figure; member of the British House of Commons; avid lecturer; author of more than 60 books, plays and opera librettos and the most active leader in the Georgist movement. Early life Born Francis Butters, the eldest of nine siblings, in Claughton Road, Birkenhead, England, he was the son of a Shropshire father, Francis Turley Butters and a Scottish mother from Dundee, Isabella Neilson Hume. He attended the Liverpool Institute for Boys. Several accounts explain that because of his large family, Neilson left school at the age of fourteen and moved to the United States at the age of eighteen. Nevertheless, the British Census of 1881 records the Butters' household as having 12 people, including 8 children and two maids.
