1908 Melbourne Carnival
The 1908 Melbourne Carnival was the inaugural Australian National Football Carnival, an Australian rules football interstate competition, held in Melbourne in August 1908. It was known at the time as the Jubilee Australasian Football Carnival because it was designed to commemorate 50 years of Australian rules football. It was the first time in which all Australian states and New Zealand had competed together in the sport. The winning team was presented with a silk pennant; and each member of the winning team received a gold championship medal. Although the 29 August final between Victoria and Western Australia was played in front of something like 15,000 spectators, it is certain that the crowd would have been considerably larger if it had not also been the first day of the American Fleet's eight-day visit to Melbourne. Australian Rules Football
Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). During general play, players may position themselves anywhere on the field and use any part of their bodies to move the ball. The primary methods are kicking, handballing and running with the ball. There are rules on how the ball can be handled; for example, players running with the ball must intermittently bounce or touch it on the ground. Throwing the ball is not allowed, and players must not get caught holding the ball. Valley Australian Football Club
Valley Australian Football Club was an Australian rules club which played in the Queensland Football League and QANFL from 1905 to 1927. They competed at Albion Park in Brisbane and had dark blue club colours. Nicknamed the Valleys, the club merged with Brisbanes Football Club (not to be confused with the earlier Brisbane Football Club) in 1928. George Le Hunte
Sir George Ruthven Le Hunte (20 August 1852 – 29 January 1925) was a British politician. He served as Governor of South Australia from 1 July 1903 until 18 February 1909, soon after federation of Australia. Life He was born in Porthgain, Pembrokeshire, Wales, the son of George and Mary Le Hunte. He was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge. Le Hunte served as President of Dominica (1887–94), secretary of Barbados (1894–97) and Mauritius (1897); and Lieutenant-Governor of British New Guinea (1899–1903). He was Governor of South Australia 1903–08/9, and then Governor of Trinidad and Tobago from 1908 to 1915, retiring 1916. Dick Condon
Richard Condon (19 March 1876 – 27 December 1946) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Collingwood and Richmond in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) and the Victorian Football League (VFL) from 1894-1900, 1902-1906 and 1908-1909. Talent Condon was a highly skilled player, a wiry and tenacious man of greater than average height (5'11"; 180 cm), with great speed, brilliant evasive skills, and an outstanding capacity for reading a game. Tom Wright (Australian Footballer)
Thomas James Wright (23 August 1882 – 12 December 1916) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Collingwood in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He was killed in action on active service in France in World War I. He was captain of the New Zealand team that competed in the 1908 Melbourne Jubilee Australasian Football Carnival, and was one of that team's best players. He finished his football career playing for the Victorian Football Association (VFA) club Prahran. A slater and tiler by profession, he played his first senior game for Collingwood, against Essendon, at Victoria Park, on 4 August 1906 (at the time of his enlistment in the army in 1916 his height was measured at 5 ft 8½in, and his weight at 11½stone). Ralph Robertson (Australian Footballer)
Ralph Robertson (31 August 1881 – 11 May 1917) was an Australian rules footballer who played with St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and had a noted career in New South Wales. Robertson was born in England and came to Melbourne when he was three years old. After playing initially for South Beach in the St Kilda League he debuted for the Saints' VFL side in 1899. He only experienced victory in one of his 14 senior games at St Kilda, which came in a one-point win against Melbourne in the opening round of the 1900 VFL season. Although primarily a rover, Robertson could also play as a centreman and up forward. Due to his work, Robertson ended up in Sydney in 1901 and as there was no substantial Australian rules football competition he took up rugby union.
