The 1907 Oklahoma elections were held on September 17, 1907, to elect every political office in the soon-to-be-formed U.S. State of Oklahoma. The elections took place in Indian Territory and Oklahoma Territory. The Oklahoma State Election Board is the governing body regarding elections in the state of Oklahoma. The Board is responsible for maintaining uniformly in the application, operation and interpretation of State and Federal election laws. Additionally, the Board is responsible for promoting and encouraging the citizens of Oklahoma to register to vote and participate in all elections by providing educational programs to raise citizen awareness about voting privileges and about the services available to them. Carrie Katherine "Kate" Richards O'Hare (March 26, 1876 – January 10, 1948) was an American Socialist Party activist, editor, and orator best known for her controversial imprisonment during World War I. Kate Barnard
Catherine Ann "Kate" Barnard (May 23, 1875 – February 23, 1930) was the first woman to be elected as a state official in Oklahoma, and the second woman to be elected to a statewide public office in the United States, in 1907. She served as the first Oklahoma Commissioner of Charities and Corrections for two four-year terms, the only position that the 1907 Oklahoma Constitution permitted a woman to hold. Before being elected to office, Barnard had worked as a teacher and in clerical patronage positions in the territorial government. She was also heavily involved in charity work. Pete Hanraty
Peter "Pete" Hanraty was an American politician, union leader, and Scottish immigrant who served as the first elected Oklahoma Chief Mine Inspector from 1907 to 1911. Early life Pete Hanraty was born in Scotland in 1864. At age nine, he began working in the Scottish coal mines. By eighteen, he immigrated to the United States and found work as a coal miner, but was blacklisted from the coal industry in Pennsylvania and Ohio for union organizing. After being blacklisted, he moved to Indian Territory to find work and unionize miners. At the time, Indian Territory was not regulated by any state or federal law making mining in the territory exceptionally dangerous. He led a successful strike in 1898. At some point in his life, he lost both legs in a mining accident. Evan Dhu Cameron was an American politician and educator who served as the first Oklahoma Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1907 to 1911 and as the Oklahoma Territory Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1894 to 1897. James A. Menefee was an American politician who served as the first Oklahoma State Treasurer from 1907 to 1911. Menefee was active in politics in both Oklahoma Territory and later Oklahoma. He served in the Oklahoma Territorial Senate in 1905 and was the first treasurer of the Oklahoma Democratic Party after Oklahoma statehood. Biography James A. William Macklin Cross
William Macklin Cross (July 4, 1847 – August 3, 1910) was an American politician who served as the first Oklahoma Secretary of State from November 16, 1907, to August 3, 1910. Early life and military career William Macklin Cross born on July 4, 1847, in Purdy, Tennessee. At fourteen he joined Confederate States Army, serving in the 154th Tennessee Infantry Regiment as a drummer in Company K. He fought alongside his father at the Battle of Shiloh where his father was killed and he was captured. After a prisoner of war exchange, Cross returned to service under Gen. Joseph E. Johnston.
