The St George's, Hanover Square by-election of 1906 was held on 15 June 1906. The by-election was held due to the resignation of the incumbent Conservative MP, Heneage Legge. Alfred Lyttelton
Alfred Lyttelton KC (7 February 1857 – 5 July 1913) was a British politician and sportsman from the Lyttelton family who excelled at both football and cricket. During his time at university he participated in Varsity Matches in five sports: cricket (1876–79), football (1876–78), athletics (1876; selected to throw the hammer), rackets (1877–79) and real tennis (1877–79), displaying an ability that made him arguably the pre-eminent sportsman of his generation; his only rival in terms of versatility was Oxford's Cuthbert Ottaway. He was, among numerous other achievements, the first man to represent England at both football and cricket. Lyttelton was also a successful politician and served as Secretary of State for the Colonies between 1903 and 1905. Westminster St George's, originally named St George's, Hanover Square, was a parliamentary constituency in Central London. It returned one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, elected by the first past the post system of election. History The constituency was created under the Redistribution of Seats Act 1885, and was then named "St George Hanover Square" after the parish of the same name. It was renamed in 1918 as "Westminster St George's", and abolished in 1950. Heneage Legge (1845–1911)
Colonel The Honourable Heneage Legge (3 July 1845 – 1 November 1911) was a British soldier and Conservative politician. Legge was the fifth son of William Legge, 4th Earl of Dartmouth, by his second wife the Honourable Frances, daughter of George Barrington, 5th Viscount Barrington. William Legge, 5th Earl of Dartmouth was his half-brother and the Right Reverend Augustus Legge his full brother. Legge was a Captain in the Coldstream Guards and a Colonel in the 9th Lancers. At the 1900 general election he was returned to parliament for St George's Hanover Square. Liberal Unionist Party
The Liberal Unionist Party was a British political party that was formed in 1886 by a faction that broke away from the Liberal Party. Led by Lord Hartington (later the Duke of Devonshire) and Joseph Chamberlain, the party established a political alliance with the Conservative Party in opposition to Irish Home Rule.
