North Leitrim was a United Kingdom constituencies, parliamentary constituency in Ireland. From 1885 to 1918 it returned one Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, House of Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. A by-election, also known as a special election in the United States and the Philippines, a bye-election in Ireland, a bypoll in India, or a Zimni election (Urdu: ضمنی انتخاب, supplementary election) in Pakistan, is an election used to fill an office that has become vacant between general elections. Patrick Aloysius McHugh
Patrick Aloysius "P.A." McHugh (1858 – 30 May 1909), also spelt M’Hugh, was an Irish Nationalist politician. He sat in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom as the Member of Parliament for North Leitrim, from 1892 to 1906, and for North Sligo from 1906 until his death in 1909. McHugh was born at Annagh, Glenfarne, County Leitrim. He was the son of a tenant farmer, Peter M’Hugh of Leitrim, and of Anne McDermott. He entered St Patrick's diocesan college, Cavan, a Catholic seminary, but left without taking orders. He went to Paris and engaged in journalism, and taught science and classics in the Athlone and Sligo Intermediate schools. In 1882 he married Mary Harte, daughter of a J. Harte of Sligo. She died in 1894. He became owner of ''The Sligo Champion'' in 1885. He was Mayor of Sligo in 1888, and again in 1895-98 and 1900. The Irish Parliamentary Party (IPP; commonly called the Irish Party or the Home Rule Party) was formed in 1874 by Isaac Butt, the leader of the Nationalist Party, replacing the Home Rule League, as official parliamentary party for Irish nationalist Members of Parliament (MPs) elected to the House of Commons at Westminster within the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland up until 1918. Its central objectives were legislative independence for Ireland and land reform. Charles Dolan (politician)
Charles Joseph Dolan (18 August 1881 – 8 June 1963) was an Irish politician and Member of Parliament (MP) for the Irish Parliamentary Party (IPP) in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland for North Leitrim from 1906 to 1908. Dolan was born in Manorhamilton, County Leitrim, the son of John Dolan, merchant, and Bridget Fitzpatrick. He was first elected to parliament in the uncontested North Leitrim by-election in February 1906, caused by the resignation of Patrick Aloysius McHugh, who had also been elected for neighbouring North Sligo. Two years later, on 30 January 1908, Dolan resigned his seat by taking the Manor of Northstead in order to re-fight the constituency on behalf of Sinn Féin. In the resulting by-election, he was defeated by Francis Meehan, the IPP candidate. After losing the by-election, Dolan emigrated to St. Louis, Missouri, then a center of shoe manufacture.
