1906 Edmonton Municipal Election
The 1906 municipal election was held December 10, 1906 for the purpose of electing a mayor and five aldermen to sit on the Edmonton City Council, as well as five public school trustees and six separate school trustees. There were eight aldermen on city council, but three of the positions were already filled: Robert Manson, Joseph Henri Picard, and Samuel Smith had been elected to two-year terms in 1905, and were still in office. William Antrobus Griesbach had also been elected to a two-year term, but resigned to run for mayor. Accordingly, the fifth place aldermanic candidate in the 1906 election - Morton MacAuley - was elected only to serve out the remaining year of Griesbach's term. Edmonton City Council
The Edmonton City Council is the governing body of the City of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Edmonton currently has one mayor and twelve city councillors. Elections are held every four years. The most recent was held in 2021, and the next is in 2025. The mayor is elected across the whole city, through the First Past the Post plurality voting system. Councillors are elected one per ward, a division of the city, through the First Past the Post plurality voting system. On July 22, 2009, City Council voted to change the electoral system of six wards to a system of 12 wards; each represented by a single councillor. The changes took effect in the 2010 election. James Walker (Alberta Politician)
James Burns Walker (born March 23, 1874; died ???) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Biography Walker was born March 23, 1874 in Alberton, Ontario. He worked in the insurance and finance businesses in Hamilton, Ontario, Hamilton before relocating to Montreal, where he spent seven years as a wholesaler. In April, 1904, he came to Edmonton and worked as an insurance and financial broker. In the 1906 Edmonton municipal election, 1906 Edmonton election he ran for Edmonton City Council as an alderman. He was elected to a two-year term after placing third of twelve candidates. He resigned a year into his term. Prosper-Edmond Lessard
Prosper-Edmond Lessard (February 3, 1873 – April 11, 1931) was a Canadian businessman, militia officer and politician. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1909 to 1921 sitting with the Liberal caucus in government. He also served in the Senate of Canada from 1925 to his death in 1931 sitting with the federal Liberal caucus. Early life Lessard was born on February 3, 1873 in Cranbourne, Quebec to Jean-Prosper Lessard and Annie Campbell Davidson. Lessard studied commerce and sciences at Collège du Mont-Saint-Louis in the mid-1890s and worked as a bookkeeper in Montreal following the completion of his studies. He left home seeking his fortune in the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush, stopping in Edmonton on his way there and went on to become a leading citizen in the Franco-Albertan community. Alexander Taylor (May 17, 1853 – February 12, 1916) was a Canadian entrepreneur, inventor and politician. He is credited as being one of the founders of the city of Edmonton. Taylor was born in on May 17, 1853, in Ottawa, Ontario, and came to Edmonton in 1877. Shortly after his arrival in Edmonton, Taylor established the first telegraph, telephone, and electricity systems. Taylor asked the Bell Telephone Company to provide services in 1883. Alex Taylor, Dominion Telegraph Agent, brought the first two telephones made of Spanish mahogany, and asked store owner Henry William McKenney of St. Albert to keep the device in St. Albert. Taylor, who, at the time was working for the Dominion Telegraph and Signal Service proposed running a telephone line from his office to St. Albert, Alberta. Morton W. MacAuley, usually known as M. W. MacAuley was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Biography MacAuley was born in Inverness County, Nova Scotia on Cape Breton. He studied medicine at Dalhousie University, and worked as a surgeon in Halifax and practiced medicine in Pictou County for ten years before coming to Edmonton. Cameron Anderson
Cameron Anderson (May 1857 – March 22, 1926) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Biography Anderson came to Edmonton prior to 1901 from North Dakota. Anderson was a long-time Edmonton resident and a building contractor. In the 1906 municipal election he was elected to a two-year term on Edmonton City Council as an alderman, placing fourth of twelve candidates. He sought re-election in the 1908 election, but finished seventh of thirteen candidates in an election in which there were only six vacancies. He did not seek political office thereafter. Thomas Daly (February 21, 1861 – November 17, 1908) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton Biography Daly was born in Letterbreen, Ireland and immigrated to Canada in 1881. He spent two years in Manitoba and moved to Alberta in 1883 to homestead at Clover Bar. He exhibited his oats at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair and won first prize; he is sometimes credited with establishing Alberta's reputation as an oats producer. He later turned to apple farming. Robert Manson
Robert John Manson (1866 or 1867 – May 10, 1932) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton, 1906-1909. Biography Manson came to Edmonton from Renfrew County, Ontario in 1891. He fast became one of the city's leading contractors, and was responsible for the creation of buildings including the Alberta Hotel and the MacKay Avenue school. He was also a director of the Edmonton Brick Co. and the Sand-lime Brick Co. He first sought political office during the 1905 municipal election, when he ran for and was elected alderman on Edmonton City Council, finishing second of eleven candidates. He won re-election in the 1907 election, finishing first of twelve candidates. Wilfrid Gariépy
Wilfrid Gariepy (March 14, 1877 – January 13, 1960) was a Canadian politician, member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta and provincial cabinet minister, member of the House of Commons of Canada, and municipal councillor in Edmonton. Early life Wilfrid Gariépy was born in Montreal, Quebec on March 14, 1877 born to parents Joseph Gariépy and Etudienne Boissoneault. He graduated high school from St-Laurent College and came to Edmonton with his family in 1893. Shortly after he returned to Montreal for university, earning a B.A. from Université Laval in 1899 and a B.C.L. from McGill University in 1902. He married Albertina Lessard, with whom he would have four children. He was admitted to the Alberta bar the same year and began work with the firm Taylor, Boyle & Gariépy. Thomas Bellamy
Thomas Bellamy (June 6, 1853 – October 11, 1926) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Bellamy was born at Canada West, which would later be the province of Ontario. The son of an English immigrant, he entered the woodworking industry after finishing school. After returning to farming briefly, he moved to Manitoba where established an agricultural product dealing business and later worked for the Massey Harris agricultural supply company. His employment with that company would bring him to Edmonton where he continued to work for them until he left to start his own business, the Bellamy Company, which manufactured agricultural products, establishing himself as a prominent Edmonton businessperson. Involved with civic affairs upon his arrival in Edmonton, Bellamy would serve terms on the school board, and eventually city council, being first elected in 1895.
