List of champions of the 1904 U.S. National Championships tennis tournament (now known as the US Open). The men's tournament was held from 21 August to 31 August on the outdoor grass courts at the Newport Casino in Newport, Rhode Island. The women's tournament was held from 21 June to 25 June on the outdoor grass courts at the Philadelphia Cricket Club in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was the 24th U.S. National Championships and the second Grand Slam tournament of the year. Grand Slam (tennis)
The Grand Slam in tennis is the achievement of winning all four major championships in one discipline in a calendar year, also referred to as the "Calendar-year Grand Slam" or "Calendar Slam". In doubles, a team may accomplish the Grand Slam playing together or a player may achieve it with different partners. Winning all four major championships consecutively but not within the same calendar year is referred to as a "non-calendar-year Grand Slam", while winning the four majors at any point during the course of a career is known as a "Career Grand Slam". The Grand Slam tournaments, also referred to as majors, are the world's four most important annual professional tennis tournaments. The Philadelphia Cricket Club, founded in 1854, is the oldest country club in the United States. It has two locations: Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, and Flourtown, Pennsylvania. History Founded on February 10, 1854, the Philadelphia Cricket Club is the oldest country club in the United States. As the name indicates, the Club was formed by a group of young men of English ancestry who had played the game of cricket as students at the University of Pennsylvania. Trevanion Dallas
Trevanion is a historic home located at Uniontown, Carroll County, Maryland, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. Trevanion is a -story brick dwelling with an asymmetrical central hall plan with a tower. The original 1817 house was converted in 1855 to the "villa style" then popular in America, incorporating a combination of Italianate and Gothic architecture elements. Reflecting this is a brick tower and an adjoining gable end projection. In 1857, a -story wing was added. "Trevanion" is a family name and a term meaning "the meeting of streams" in Welsh. Carrie Neely
Carrie Neely (January 24, 1876 – November 29, 1938) was an American tennis player from the beginning of the 20th century. Biography Carrie Neely was educated at the Dearborn Seminary, Chicago. Tennis career In 1907, she reached the women's singles All Comer's final of the U.S. Women's National Championship, where she was beaten by Evelyn Sears. She also won the mixed doubles in 1898, and won the women's doubles on three occasions (1903, 1905 and 1907). At the tournament now known as the Cincinnati Masters, she reached the singles final in 1915, the semifinals in 1902, 1903, 1904 and 1912, and the quarterfinals in 1901 and 1916. She paired with Winona Closterman to win the doubles title in 1902 and 1903, and teamed with Closterman again in 1904 to reach the doubles final. She won the mixed doubles title with Nat Emerson in 1903, and paired with Kreigh Collins, also of Chicago, to reach the mixed doubles final in 1901. Raymond Little
Raymond Demorest Little (January 5, 1880 – July 29, 1932) was an American tennis player. He was ranked in the U.S. Top 10 eleven times between 1900 and 1912, his highest ranking coming in 1907 when he was ranked No. 4. He played on the United States Davis Cup team, and also won the intercollegiate tennis title for Princeton University in 1900. Biography Little was born on January 5, 1880. His father was Joseph J. Little, an English-born Democratic Party member of Congress, publishing executive, and civil war veteran. He attended Princeton University, where he was the president of Colonial Club. He was also captain for the Princeton Tigers men's ice hockey team in 1901. At the tournament now known as the Cincinnati Masters, the oldest tournament in the U.S. played in its original city, Little reached 12 finals in eight appearances between 1900 and 1907: four singles finals, six doubles finals and two mixed doubles finals.
