The Big Ten Conference (stylized B1G, formerly the Western Conference and the Big Nine Conference) is the oldest Division I collegiate athletic conference in the United States. Stagg Field
Amos Alonzo Stagg Field is the name of two successive football fields for the University of Chicago. Beyond sports, the first Stagg Field (1893–1957) is remembered for its role in a landmark scientific achievement of Enrico Fermi and the Metallurgical Laboratory during the Manhattan Project. The site of the first artificial nuclear chain reaction, which occurred within the field's west viewing-stands structure, received designation as a National Historic Landmark on February 18, 1965. On October 15, 1966, which is the day that the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 was enacted creating the National Register of Historic Places, it was added to that as well. Minnesota–Wisconsin Football Rivalry
The Minnesota–Wisconsin football rivalry is an American college football rivalry between the Minnesota Golden Gophers and Wisconsin Badgers. It is the most-played rivalry in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision, with 132 meetings between the two teams. The winner of the game receives Paul Bunyan's Axe, a tradition that started in 1948 after the first trophy, the Slab of Bacon, disappeared after the 1943 game when the Badgers were supposed to turn it over to the Golden Gophers. Northrop Field
Northrop Field was the on-campus stadium of the Minnesota Golden Gophers football team from 1899 to 1923. The original field had seating of around 3,000 and was named for University President Cyrus Northrop. After the 1902 season, the playing field was moved and new seating was added that allowed for crowds of up to 20,000. The stadium was sometimes referred to as Greater Northrop Field after 1902. In 1903, the first season at the enlarged field, the Gophers played the Michigan Wolverines in the first Little Brown Jug game. The stadium continued on as the football team's home until the end of the 1923 season. The U of M then built Memorial Stadium and moved there in 1924. Williams, the Golden Gophers compiled a 9–2–1 record (3–1 against Western Conference opponents), finished in third place in the conference, shut out nine of their twelve opponents, and outscored all opponents by a combined total of 335 to 34. 1902 Michigan Wolverines Football Team
The 1902 Michigan Wolverines football team represented the University of Michigan in the 1902 Western Conference football season. In their second year under head coach Fielding H. Yost, Michigan finished the season undefeated with an 11–0 record, outscored their opponents by a combined score of 644 to 12, and became known as the second of Yost's famed "Point-a-Minute" teams. With a conference record of 5–0, Michigan won the Big Nine Conference championship. The 1902 Michigan Wolverines have also been recognized as the national champions by the Billingsley Report, Helms Athletic Foundation, Houlgate System, and National Championship Foundation, and as co-national champions by Parke H. Philip King (American Football)
Philip King (March 16, 1872 – January 7, 1938) was an American football player, coach, and lawyer. He played quarterback for the Princeton Tigers football team of Princeton University from 1890 to 1893, and was selected to the College Football All-America Team in 1891, 1892, and 1893. After his playing days, he served as the head football coach at the University of Wisconsin–Madison from 1896 to 1902 and again in 1905, and at Georgetown University in 1903, compiling a career college football record of 73–14–1. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a player in 1962. Early life King, who was Jewish, was born in Washington, D.C.
