1901 Edmonton Municipal Election
The 1901 municipal election was held December 9, 1901 for the purpose of electing a mayor and four aldermen to sit on the Edmonton Town Council, as well as five public school trustees and five separate school trustees. There were six aldermanic positions on the council at the time, but two of them were already filled: William Thomas Henry and Joseph Morris had both been elected for a two-year term in 1900, and were still in office. Henry Goodridge had also been elected for a two-year term, but had resigned; accordingly, one of the positions up for election in 1901 - the one filled by Goodridge himself - was for only a one-year term. Edmonton Town Council
The Edmonton City Council is the governing body of the City of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Edmonton currently has one mayor and twelve city councillors. Elections are held every four years. The most recent was held in 2021, and the next is in 2025. The mayor is elected across the whole city, through the First Past the Post plurality voting system. Councillors are elected one per ward, a division of the city, through the First Past the Post plurality voting system. On July 22, 2009, City Council voted to change the electoral system of six wards to a system of 12 wards; each represented by a single councillor. The changes took effect in the 2010 election. Matthew McCauley (politician)
Matthew McCauley (July 11, 1850 – October 25, 1930) was the first mayor of the city of Edmonton, and a member of the legislative assemblies of both the Northwest Territories and Alberta. McCauley was born into a farming family in Sydenham, Canada West (what would become the province of Ontario) to an Irish father and Canadian mother. His restless nature and desire for adventure led him to travel west to Manitoba. In Manitoba, he established a livery business, which he ran until he set off for Edmonton in 1879. He farmed for two years in Fort Saskatchewan before finally moving to Edmonton, where he established the settlement's first livery and cartage business. Along with a couple prominent Edmonton citizens, he formed an association aimed to restore order in the area, settling many disputes, including during the 1885 Riel Rebellion as its captain. Joseph Henri Picard
Joseph Henri Picard (February 18, 1857 – May 23, 1934) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Picard was born in Saint-Jean-de-Matha, Quebec on February 18, 1857. He apprenticed as a carpenter before coming west in 1884 to Fort Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan, Fort Qu'Appelle and then Regina, Saskatchewan, Regina. In Calgary, he met Father Albert Lacombe, who suggested to him that he move to Edmonton, which he did in 1887. Once in Edmonton, he opened a general store, Larue & Picard; it was sold in 1907 when both he and his partner retired. In 1903, he married Martine Voyer. The couple had two sons. Nicholas Dubois Dominic Beck (May 4, 1857 – May 15, 1928) was a lawyer and jurist in Alberta, Canada. Early life Beck was born in Cobourg, Ontario on May 4, 1857, to Reverend J.W.R. and Georgina (Boulton) Beck. He attended private schools and the Collegiate Institute of Peterboro. He graduated from the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall Law School with a Bachelor of Laws in 1881, having been practicing in Peterborough, Ontario since 1879. Career Lawyer He was called to the Ontario bar in 1882, moving his practice to Winnipeg, Manitoba the year after, then made his way further west, to Calgary in 1889 practicing at the firm of Lougheed, McCarthy & Beck, and settling in Edmonton in 1891 to form the firm of Beck, Emery, Newell and Boulton. Alex Taylor (businessman)
Alexander Taylor (May 17, 1853 – February 12, 1916) was a Canadian entrepreneur, inventor and politician. He is credited as being one of the founders of the city of Edmonton. Taylor was born in on May 17, 1853, in Ottawa, Ontario, and came to Edmonton in 1877. Shortly after his arrival in Edmonton, Taylor established the first telegraph, telephone, and electricity systems. Taylor asked the Bell Telephone Company to provide services in 1883. Alex Taylor, Dominion Telegraph Agent, brought the first two telephones made of Spanish mahogany, and asked store owner Henry William McKenney of St. Albert to keep the device in St. Albert. Taylor, who, at the time was working for the Dominion Telegraph and Signal Service proposed running a telephone line from his office to St. Albert, Alberta. Kenneth McLeod
Kenneth Archibald McLeod (September 7, 1858 – July 27, 1940), was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. He was also the builder of the McLeod Building, the Edmonton's first skyscraper. Early life and career McLeod was born September 7, 1858 in Port Elgin, Ontario. His family moved to Kansas in 1870 and homesteaded near Solomon three years before moving to Lynchburg, Virginia. McLeod worked with his father in the lumber and construction businesses. In 1879, he moved to Winnipeg, where he stayed for two years before setting out for Edmonton August 5, 1881. His journey was on foot, in the company of two other men with three oxen, three Red River carts, a buckboard, and a pony. After ninety-one days of travel, he arrived in Edmonton November 3. Thomas Bellamy (politician)
Thomas Bellamy (June 6, 1853 – October 11, 1926) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Bellamy was born at Canada West, which would later be the province of Ontario. The son of an English immigrant, he entered the woodworking industry after finishing school. After returning to farming briefly, he moved to Manitoba where established an agricultural product dealing business and later worked for the Massey Harris agricultural supply company. His employment with that company would bring him to Edmonton where he continued to work for them until he left to start his own business, the Bellamy Company, which manufactured agricultural products, establishing himself as a prominent Edmonton businessperson. Involved with civic affairs upon his arrival in Edmonton, Bellamy would serve terms on the school board, and eventually city council, being first elected in 1895. William Thomas Henry
William Thomas Henry (January 2, 1871 – March 12, 1952) was a politician, real estate agent and businessman in Alberta, Canada. He served numerous years on Edmonton City Council as an Alderman from 1900 to 1902 and later as mayor from 1914 to 1917. He also served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1924 to 1926 sitting with the Liberal caucus. Early life Henry was born in Prince Edward Island January 2, 1872. He moved to Calgary, Alberta, in 1890 and entered the dry goods business. Three years later, he moved to Edmonton and opened W. T. Henry and Co., Clothing, Boots and Shoes which outfitted parties going to the Klondike Gold Rush. Phillip Heiminck
Phillip Heimink (May 17, 1849 – September 11, 1922) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Biography Heiminck was born in Simcoe, Ontario, and moved to Winnipeg in 1870. There he married Isabella Green in 1873 and was involved in mercantilism before moving to Edmonton in 1881. In 1883 he moved to Fort Saskatchewan for ten years, returning to Edmonton in 1893. Upon his return, he engaged in real estate, building among other things the so-called "Heiminck Block" in downtown Edmonton. Edmund Grierson
Edmund Edward DeLesert Grierson (April 2, 1860 – March 4, 1922) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Biography Grierson was born in Cavan, Canada West on April 2, 1860. He left home when he was eleven years old and worked a variety of jobs in western Ontario until 1878. He subsequently moved to Michigan and worked in the lumbering and railroad businesses; upon his return to Canada in 1883, he worked on constructing the Canadian Pacific Railway line westward from Winnipeg, Manitoba. He worked for the Canadian Anthracite Coal Company for eight years, and then helped with the construction of the CPR Hotel in Banff. He came to Edmonton in 1893 and purchased the Queen's Hotel with business partner Fred Jackson. He managed it for three years before buying the Alberta Hotel in 1897, on to which he added an addition which made it the first four-storey structure in Edmonton.
