1899 Edmonton Municipal Election
The 1899 municipal election was held December 11, 1899. It was the first municipal election in which only a portion of the aldermen were to be elected; in 1898, three of the six aldermen elected were elected to two-year terms in preparation for a system in which only half of the aldermen would be up for election each year. Kenneth McLeod, Alfred Jackson, and Kenneth W. MacKenzie were all only halfway through their two-year terms at the time of the election. However, MacKenzie resigned in order to become mayor, leaving council with four vacancies. Only three were filled by the election; council appointed Henry Goodridge to fill the fourth seat until the 1900 election. 1898 Edmonton Municipal Election
The 1898 municipal election was held December 12, 1898. In previous elections, an entire town council had been elected at once for a one-year term; 1898 marked the beginning of staggered aldermanic terms, such that half of the six aldermen would be elected each year to two-year terms. The mayor continued to be elected annually. Because in the previous election all six aldermen had been elected to a one-year term, it was still necessary to elect six aldermen. However, in order to set up the staggered terms, three were to be elected to one-year terms and three to two-year terms. In addition to the city council, five public school trustees and four private school trustees were elected. Kenneth McLeod
Kenneth Archibald McLeod (September 7, 1858 – July 27, 1940), was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. He was also the builder of the McLeod Building, the Edmonton's first skyscraper. Early life and career McLeod was born September 7, 1858 in Port Elgin, Ontario. His family moved to Kansas in 1870 and homesteaded near Solomon three years before moving to Lynchburg, Virginia. McLeod worked with his father in the lumber and construction businesses. In 1879, he moved to Winnipeg, where he stayed for two years before setting out for Edmonton August 5, 1881. Henry Goodridge (Alberta Politician)
Henry Goodridge (October 26, 1849 – February 25, 1914) was a politician and municipal councillor in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Biography Goodridge first came to Edmonton in 1874 with a troop of soldiers, visiting a settlement that had only recently started to expand beyond the confines of Fort Edmonton, near the present site of the Alberta Legislature Building. Goodridge returned in 1876, becoming the first white settler in the area that is now the neighbourhoods of the former Town of Jasper Place, roughly west of Fort Edmonton. When his fiancé, D. S. McKay, arrived some time later, they married and homesteaded a farm roughly west of Fort Edmonton, near what is now Stony Plain. He later worked for a time in the implement trade. The 1900 municipal election was held December 10, 1900 for the purpose of electing a mayor and three aldermen to sit on the Edmonton Town Council, as well as five public school trustees and four separate school trustees. There were six aldermanic positions on the council at the time, but three of them were already filled. Robert Lee and Alfred Brown had both been elected for a two-year term in 1899, and were still in office. Colin Strang had also been elected for a two-year term, but had resigned; James Blowey had been appointed by council to fill his seat, and he was still in office. Colin Strang (politician)
Colin Ferrie Strang (June 25, 1850 – December 10, 1900) was a politician in Alberta, Canada, and an alderman on Edmonton Town Council. Biography Strang was born in 1850 in Toronto to Struthers Strang, originally from Scotland and Janet Ferrie. He was educated in Hamilton. After a period working for hardware dealers W. McGivern & Co., in 1871 he moved to Winnipeg, where he worked as a bookkeeper (eventually as the head of his own accounting office) until moving to Edmonton in 1883. He became Edmonton's leading city accountant, and also worked as bank manager for Lafferty & Moore in 1890 and as business manager for the Moore and MacDowell sawmill in 1893. He was part owner of Ross Bros., a hardware firm. In 1892 he ran for alderman on Edmonton's first town council. He finished first of fourteen candidates (the top six were elected). Matthew McCauley (politician)
Matthew McCauley (July 11, 1850 – October 25, 1930) was the first mayor of the city of Edmonton, and a member of the legislative assemblies of both the Northwest Territories and Alberta. McCauley was born into a farming family in Sydenham, Canada West (what would become the province of Ontario) to an Irish father and Canadian mother. His restless nature and desire for adventure led him to travel west to Manitoba. In Manitoba, he established a livery business, which he ran until he set off for Edmonton in 1879. He farmed for two years in Fort Saskatchewan before finally moving to Edmonton, where he established the settlement's first livery and cartage business. Along with a couple prominent Edmonton citizens, he formed an association aimed to restore order in the area, settling many disputes, including during the 1885 Riel Rebellion as its captain. William Short (Alberta Politician)
William Short (January 11, 1866 – January 27, 1926) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a two time mayor of Edmonton. Biography Short was born July 11, 1866 near Elora, Ontario and studied law at the University of Toronto before coming to Alberta in 1889. He articled to James Alexander Lougheed from 1891 until 1894, when he was called to the provincial bar. That year, he moved to Edmonton and opened a law practice before partnering with Charles Cross in 1900 to form Short & Cross (which still exists today under the name Duncan Craig LLP). He married Henrietta McMaster on February 7, 1900; the pair had one son and one daughter. Alex Taylor (businessman)
Alexander Taylor (May 17, 1853 – February 12, 1916) was a Canadian entrepreneur, inventor and politician. He is credited as being one of the founders of the city of Edmonton. Taylor was born in on May 17, 1853, in Ottawa, Ontario, and came to Edmonton in 1877. Shortly after his arrival in Edmonton, Taylor established the first telegraph, telephone, and electricity systems. Taylor asked the Bell Telephone Company to provide services in 1883. Alex Taylor, Dominion Telegraph Agent, brought the first two telephones made of Spanish mahogany, and asked store owner Henry William McKenney of St. Albert to keep the device in St. Albert. Taylor, who, at the time was working for the Dominion Telegraph and Signal Service proposed running a telephone line from his office to St. Albert, Alberta.
