Edward Scofield
Edward Scofield (March 28, 1842February 3, 1925) was an American lumberman and Republican politician. He was the 19th governor of Wisconsin (1897–1901) and served in the Wisconsin State Senate, representing Door, Marinette, and Oconto counties. Earlier in life, during the American Civil War, he served as an officer in the Union Army. Early life Scofield was born in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, on March 28, 1842. He became a printer's apprentice at a newspaper in Indiana, Pennsylvania, and worked in the newspaper business for a number of years. Civil War service At the outbreak of the American Civil War, Scofield volunteered for service in the Union Army and was enrolled as a private in Company K of the 11th Pennsylvania Reserve Regiment. He was promoted to corporal and then sergeant, and, on April 15, 1863, after the Battle of South Mountain, he was commissioned as first lieutenant. Hiram Wilson Sawyer
Hiram Wilson Sawyer (June 11, 1843September 14, 1922) was an American lawyer, Democratic politician, and Wisconsin pioneer. He was the first mayor of Hartford, Wisconsin, and was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly, representing southern Washington County in the 1873 and 1874 sessions. He was also the Democratic nominee for Governor of Wisconsin in 1898, but lost the election. Biography Hiram Wilson Sawyer was born June 11, 1843, at North Haverhill, New Hampshire. He came with his parents to the Wisconsin Territory in 1846, settling on a farm in the town of Burnett in Dodge County. He attended the common schools in Dodge County and graduated from the Wayland Academy in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. He then read law in the offices of Lewis & Fribert in Juneau, Wisconsin, and was admitted to the bar in January 1867. Wisconsin's 2nd congressional district is a congressional district of the United States House of Representatives in southern Wisconsin, covering Dane County, Iowa County, Lafayette County, Sauk County and Green County, as well as portions of Richland County and Rock County. The district includes Madison, the state's capital, its suburbs and some of the surrounding areas. Like many districts anchored by a college town, the district is heavily Democratic, and includes the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Wisconsin gubernatorial elections are held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November every four years on even, non-presidential election years since 1970. Between 1884 and 1970, gubernatorial elections were held on every even-numbered year. Prior to 1882, gubernatorial elections were held on every odd-numbered year. The Wisconsin gubernatorial election selects the Governor of Wisconsin and Lieutenant Governor of Wisconsin who will take office for a four-year term beginning the first Monday of the first January following the election. The election operates under first-past-the-post rules with no runoff. Prior to 2014, the lieutenant gubernatorial election was a separate election on the same ballot.
