1897 WAFA Season
The 1897 WAFA season was the 13th season of senior Australian rules football in Perth, Western Australia. West Perth won the premiership, their first, after remaining undefeated throughout the season. The Rovers team finished last and failed to field a team for the final rounds of the season, forfeiting several matches to their opponents. 1897 was also the final season that Imperials competed, when at the end of the season it was discovered that “many of the bills were unpaid and that creditors were clamorous”. Albert Thurgood
Albert John Thurgood (11 January 1874 – 8 May 1927) was an Australian rules footballer in the Victorian Football Association (VFA), VFL/AFL, Victorian Football League (VFL) and the West Australian Football League, Western Australian Football Association (WAFA). He is considered one of the great champion players of the VFA and VFL and possibly the longest place kick of any code in history. Described as "an ideal footballer", he usually played at centre-half-forward; but his skill and versatility enabled him to be switched to any position on the ground. He has been described as the “first icon of Australian Rules football”. Australian Rules Football
Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). During general play, players may position themselves anywhere on the field and use any part of their bodies to move the ball. The primary methods are kicking, handballing and running with the ball. John Leckie (Australian Politician)
John William Leckie (14 October 187225 September 1947) was an Australian politician. He served as a Senator for Victoria from 1935 to 1947, having previously been a member of the House of Representatives from 1917 to 1919 and the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1913 to 1917. Early life Leckie was born at Alexandra, Victoria and educated at Scotch College, Melbourne. He played Australian rules football for Fitzroy Football Club (then in the Victorian Football Association) in 1895. He studied medicine at the University of Melbourne for two years, but after falling out with his father he prospected for gold in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia and played football in Fremantle. In 1897, he returned to Alexandra to run the family store, his father having died. In April 1898, he married May Beatrix Johnston. Barney Grecian
Ernest Ferdinand Grecian, best known as Barney Grecian (18 November 1871 – 2 June 1919), was an Australian rules football player. Early life Grecian was born in Geelong, Victoria in 1872. Playing career Grecian joined in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) at the end of 1892, and made his debut in 1893. He played two VFA premierships with Essendon before moving to Western Australia in 1896, and joining in the West Australian Football Association (WAFA - now WAFL), where he captained premiership-winning teams in 1897 and 1899. Between 1896 and 1900, he played 65 matches for West Perth. His state league career ended when he transferred in 1900 to Coolgardie to work in the post office. Death In 1919 Grecian was hospitalised with athlete's heart. He died on 2 June 1919 and was buried at Karrakatta Cemetery. WACA Ground
The WACA (formally the WACA Ground) is a sports stadium in Perth, Western Australia. The stadium's name derives from the initials of its owners and operators, the Western Australian Cricket Association. The WACA has been referred to as Western Australia's "home of cricket" since the early 1890s, with Test cricket played at the ground since the 1970–71 season. The ground is the home venue of Western Australia's first-class cricket team, the Western Warriors, and the state's Women's National Cricket League side, the Western Fury. The Perth Scorchers, a Big Bash League franchise, played home matches at the ground until 2019. Fremantle Oval
Fremantle Oval, also known by naming rights sponsorship as Fremantle Community Bank Oval, is a stadium in the centre of Fremantle, Western Australia, located on Parry Street. It currently has a capacity of 17,500 with terracing and a members area holding 750, though capacity was capped at 10,000 for Fremantle AFLW games. Fremantle Oval was originally used for cricket, but in 1895 hosted its first game of Australian rules football and Australian Football quickly became the main attraction leading to the development of the ground. Edward Lockwood (6 December 1872 – 25 June 1953) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Geelong and Collingwood during the years following the formation of the Victorian Football League (VFL).
