1895 VFA Season
The 1895 Victorian Football Association season was the 19th season of the Australian rules football competition. The season was opened on 4 May, and concluded on 21 September. won the premiership by six points, with a record of 12 wins, 5 draws and one loss. It was Fitzroy's first VFA premiership. Premiership season In 1895, the VFA competition consisted of thirteen teams of 20 on-the-field players each. Unless otherwise noted, matches began at 3pm. Because there was an odd number of teams, at least one team had a bye each week; the idle club often travelled to Ballarat to play one of the local senior clubs in a non-premiership match. When reporting match scores in 1895, the number of goals and behinds scored by each team is given; however, only the number of goals scored is considered when determining the result of a match. 1894 VFA Season
The 1894 Victorian Football Association season was the 18th season of the Australian rules football competition. The premiership was won by the Essendon Football Club by a margin of fourteen points, finishing with a record of 16 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss from 18 matches. It was Essendon's fourth consecutive premiership. Ladder For the first time, fixtures were standardised under the control of a central committee, with all teams playing 18 premiership matches (i.e. playing half of the other 12 clubs twice and the other half once): thus, the 1888-1893 proportional points system was no longer required. Prior to 1894, teams had played differing numbers of matches, meaning their final records would be adjusted to allow them to be ranked on an equivalent basis. Punt Road Oval
Punt Road Oval, also known by naming rights sponsorship as the Swinburne Centre, is an Australian rules football ground and former cricket oval located within the Yarra Park precinct of East Melbourne, Victoria, situated a few hundred metres to the east of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The oval is a former venue of the Victorian Football League (now Australian Football League), with 544 VFL/AFL premiership matches played there between 1908 and 1964. The venue is the training and administrative headquarters of the Richmond Football Club, and also hosts the club's reserves and women's premiership matches. Ballarat Football League
The Ballarat Football League (BFL) is an Australian rules football competition that operates in the Ballarat region of Victoria, Australia. The competition formed in 1893 as the Ballarat Football Association and was renamed Ballarat Football League in 1908 and was briefly known as the Ballarat-Wimmera Football League between 1934 and 1936. Overview The league features 11 senior clubs. North Ballarat City Football Club joined the league in 2008 season raising the number of teams to the present number. Norwood Football Club, nicknamed the Redlegs, is an Australian rules football club competing in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) in the state of South Australia. Kicks After The Siren In Australian Rules Football
In Australian rules football, if a player takes a mark or is awarded a free kick before the siren sounds to end a quarter, and the siren sounds before the player takes a set shot, the player is allowed to take the kick after the siren. Often, the result of this kick is of little consequence, but if the player is within range of goal, any score will count towards the final result. The right to take a set shot after the final bell was enshrined in the Laws of the Game prior to the 1889 season; prior to this, the ball was declared dead (and any opportunity for a set shot lost) once the bell sounded. The Fitzroy Doncaster Cricket Club, nicknamed the Lions, play cricket in the elite club competition of Melbourne, Australia, known as Victorian Premier Cricket. North Melbourne Cricket Club
Greenvale Cricket Club is an Australian cricket team competing in the Victorian Premier Cricket competition. The club began as the North Melbourne Cricket Club, and was one of the inaugural Victorian district cricket clubs in 1906/07. It played its home games at the Arden Street Oval in North Melbourne for many years. Eddy James
Edwin Ernest 'Eddy' James (14 February 1874 – 16 September 1937) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Geelong Football Club, Geelong in the years before and following the formation of the Australian Football League, VFL. Football James started his career as a backman, playing a game at 15 after Geelong were short for players. He moved to the forward line in his return in 1892, and in 1895 finished with 24 goals to be equal third in the VFA goalkicking. In the inaugural VFL season in 1897 VFL season, 1897, he kicked 22 goals in the home-and-away season to share the Coleman Medal, Leading Goalkicker Award with Jack Leith; incidentally, this is the lowest amount of goals to have ever earned this award—and it will likely hold this record in perpetuity due to the high-scoring nature of the modern game. Jim Grace (Australian Footballer)
Jim Grace (21 September 1868 – 31 December 1938) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Fitzroy Football Club in the club's early years. His younger brother, Mick Grace, played beside him at Fitzroy. Football Grace joined Fitzroy in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) in 1890. He played as a full-forward and dominated Fitzroy's goalkicking during his time at the club, winning the club's leading goalkicker award every year from his debut through until 1896. He was also the league's leading goalkicker in his first two seasons, 1890 and 1891. Grace was part of Fitzroy's 1895 premiership team, the same season that his younger brother Mick joined him at the Maroons. Archie Smith (footballer, Born 1872)
Arthur Robert Smith (16 February 1872 – 20 July 1961) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Collingwood in the years leading up to and following the formation of the Victorian Football League (VFL). Playing career Smith, who was recruited from Richmond Football Club, was Collingwood's main target up forward during his career. Smith made his VFL debut in Collingwood's inaugural VFL game, against St Kilda Football Club in round one, 1897, and went on to top their goal-kicking in each of his first four seasons. Smith's tally of 31 goals in 1898 was enough to win the VFL Leading Goalkicker Medal. Although he wasn't the most prolific forward for Collingwood in 1901, his 30 goals helped his club reach the 1901 VFL Grand Final, where they lost to Essendon. Lakeside Stadium is an Australian sports arena in the South Melbourne suburb of Albert Park.
