1895 Harvard Crimson Football Team
The 1895 Harvard Crimson football team represented Harvard University in the 1895 college football season. The Crimson finished with an 8–2–1 record. First-year head coach Robert Emmons led the team from October 21 to November 3. Following the team's 12–4 loss to Princeton, assistant Lorin F. Deland took over as head coach. He led the team to a 1–1–1 record in their last three games, including a 17–14 loss to Penn, the closest the undefeated Quakers came to defeat that year. Robert Emmons
Robert Wales Emmons II (December 28, 1872 – April 18, 1928) was an American football player, coach, yachtsman, and millionaire. He played and coached college football for Harvard University from 1891 to 1895. He later had a successful career in the banking and stock brokerage business. He was an avid yachtsman who was the managing owner of the '' Resolute'' in its successful defense of the America's Cup in 1920. Early years Emmons was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1872. He was the son of Nathaniel H. Emmons and Eleanor G. (Bacon) Emmons. He attended preparatory school at Groton School. The Plain (West Point)
The Plain is the parade field at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. The flat terrain of the Plain is in contrast to the varied and hilly terrain of the remainder of the campus. The Plain rises approximately above the Hudson River and has been the site of the longest continually occupied U.S. Army garrison in America since 1778. In its early years, the entire academy was located on the Plain and it was used for varying activities ranging from drill and mounted cavalry maneuvers to an encampment site for summer training to a sports venue. The Harvard–Penn football rivalry is an American college football rivalry between the Harvard Crimson and Penn Quakers. The first game was played in 1881. In the first 18 games played in this 88 game series, Harvard won 13 and Penn won 5. In 1958 Penn pulled even with 14 games won by each school. There was 1 tie (1940). The 1895 Michigan Wolverines football team was an American football team that represented the University of Michigan in the 1895 college football season. In its second and final season under head coach William McCauley, the team compiled an 8–1 record, won seven of their games by shutouts, and outscored their opponents by a combined score of 266 to 14. The 1895 Wolverines won their first five games by a combined score of 220 to 0. The sole loss of the season was a 4–0 setback against the Harvard Crimson, then one of the three great football powers.
