1895 Copenhagen Women's Exhibition
The Women's Exhibition from the Past and Present ( da, Kvindernes Udstilling fra Fortid og Nutid) held in Copenhagen in 1895 was an art and culture exhibition for women from the Nordic countries. Inspired by the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago, it was designed to demonstrate how far Nordic women had advanced in the areas of education, employment and art. The first of its kind in Europe, it was considered a great success. Background The Chicago World's Fair in 1893 had impressed Danish visitors with its Woman's Building containing presentations of art and literature. Sophie Oxholm (1848–1935), who had visited the exhibition, was obviously impressed by the exhibition, especially the show of Danish needlework. Elna Borch
Elna Inger Cathrine Borch (6 December 1869 – 3 October 1950) was a Danish sculptor. Although her known work is considered high quality by art dealers, Borch is today largely forgotten and little known to the general public. Biography Borch was born in Roskilde, Denmark. She was the daughter of merchant Anders Jacob Borch (1834–1904) and Martha Petrine Willumsen (1845–1922). She came from a family full of artists, including her uncle Jacob Kornerup (1825–1913), who taught her how to draw. She later learned sculpture in Copenhagen from sculptor August Saabye, who became her instructor when she was at the Academy of Fine Arts for Women (''Kunstakademiets Kunstskole for Kvinde''). Ville Bang
Marie Vilhelmine Bang, commonly known as Ville Bang, (1848–1932) was a Danish painter of portraits, landscapes and genre works. In 1888, together with 22 other women, she presented a petition to the parliament, calling for the Art Academy to be expanded to admit women. It led to the establishment of where in October 1888 she was one of the first students. Together with , she later opened an art school to prepare women for the Academy. Biography Born on 3 March 1848 in Copenhagen, Marie Vilhelmine Bang was the daughter of the politician and later prime minister Peter Georg Bang (1797–1861) and Marie Caroline Fribert (1803–1875). Anna Ancher
Anna Ancher (18 August 1859 – 15 April 1935) was a Danish artist associated with the Skagen Painters, an artist colony on the northern point of Jylland, Denmark. She is considered to be one of Denmark's greatest visual artists. Background Anna Kirstine Brøndum was born in Skagen, Denmark, the daughter of Ane Hedvig Møller (1826–1916) and Erik Andersen Brøndum (1820–1890). She was the only one of the Skagen Painters who was born and grew up in Skagen, where her father owned the Brøndums Hotel. The artistic talent of Anna Ancher became obvious at an early age and she became acquainted with pictorial art via the many artists who settled to paint in Skagen, in the north of Jylland. Tekla Griebel Wandall
Tekla Griebel-Wandall (26 February 1866 – 28 June 1940) was a Danish composer and music educator. Biography Tekla Griebel was born in Randers, Denmark, the daughter of Theodor Johan Heinrich Griebel (1829–1900) and teacher Camilla Joachimine Andresen (1829–91). She began her musical studies at the age of seven, taking piano lessons from her father. Later she took singing lessons, and at the age of fifteen, she was admitted to Draw School for Women where she studied to be a figurative artist. However, she was more interested in music, and in 1886 she wrote her first opera ''Don Juan de Marana'' (eventually performed in 1931). Katharina Elisabeth Tuxen Meyer (b. 19 July 1859, d. 4 July 1927) was a Danish composer. She was born in Svendborg, Denmark, sister of singer Marie English. Nanna Liebmann
Nanna Magdalene Liebmann (September 27, 1849 – May 11, 1935) was a Danish, music educator, music critic, concert promoter and composer. She studied at The Royal Danish Academy of Music with Victor Bendix, Johann Christian Gebauer, J.P.E. Hartmann, Niels W. Gade, August Winding and Carl Helsted. At the conservatory she met composer Axel Liebmann, whom she married in 1874. He died soon afterward and she turned to composing and teaching music to support herself and her child. Most of her compositions are written between 1869 and 1914, and she wrote reviews for ''Dannebrog''. Johanne Amalie Fenger
Johanne Amalie Fenger (September 5, 1836 – August 11, 1913) was a Danish composer. Fenger was born in the town of Lynge to a family of priests, doctors and officials. Her father was the priest and theologian . Fenger composed music from a young age, and her family's association with the poet Bernhard Severin Ingemann likely influenced her musical development and interest in composing songs for literary texts. When her father was given a new parish in Høje Tåstrup in 1854, 18-year-old Fenger was able to travel to Copenhagen by train to receive piano and music theory lessons from Leopold Rosenfeld and Edvard Helsted. She was also musically influenced by her relative Christian Barnekow, who was a composer and the president of the Society for the Publication of Danish Music. Nielsine Petersen (10 July 1851 – 26 November 1916) was a Danish sculptor. Biography Nielsine Caroline Petersen was born at Nyrup in the parish Højby on the island of Zealand, Denmark. She was the daughter of Mads Petersen (1875-1884) and Kirstine born Madsen (1826-c. 1885). She came to Copenhagen and visited Vilhelm Kyhn's drawing school, after which she became a student of August Saabye. Johanne Agnete Theresia Pedersen-Dan née Betzonich (1860–1934) was a Danish actress, singer and sculptor. After performing in plays and operettas in Copenhagen until 1888, she devoted the rest of her life to sculpture, frequently exhibiting her work at Charlottenborg.
