1894 Northwest Territories General Election
The 1894 North-West Territories general election was held on 31 October 1894. This was the third general election in the history of the North-West Territories, Canada. It was held to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of the North-West Territories, the writs were dropped on 3 October 1894. Frederick Haultain continued to lead the government. This was the first general election a secret ballot was held, with voters marking an X on a blank piece of paper in the colour that corresponds to their candidate. Election results The turnout cannot be established, as no voters lists were in use. Candidates were elected as part of a consensus government, i.e. without political parties. Thomas Tweed
Thomas Andrew Tweed (April 14, 1853 – April 4, 1906) was a merchant and political figure in the Northwest Territories, Canada. He represented Medicine Hat in the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories from 1888 to 1894 as a Conservative. He was born in Kingston, Canada West, the son of Thomas Tweed and Jane Hiditch, and was educated there. He served in the Red River Expedition of 1870 with Garnet Wolseley. Tweed was employed in cotton mills in Montreal and Cornwall, Ontario, reaching the position of manager. In 1873, he married Helen Sutherland. He went west to Medicine Hat in 1883, where he established a general store in partnership with James Alexander Lougheed. He later established a large ranch in partnership with John Ewart. Edward Fearon
Edward L. Fearon (September 20, 1859November 3, 1933) was a Canadian politician. He served on the North-West Legislative Assembly for Medicine Hat from 1894 to 1898. Early life Edward L. Fearon was born September 20, 1859 in Scotland. Fearon moved to Kingston, Ontario in 1878 and joined the North-West Mounted Police where he was stationed at Fort Walsh. Political life Fearon contested the 1894 North-West Territories general election in the Medicine Hat electoral district against incumbent Thomas Tweed. In the years prior to the election, the Medicine Hat community became divided with Tweed around the issues of prohibition, hospital supply purchasing and obtaining government contracts for friends. Fearon was a popular rancher near Maple Creek. During the campaign Tweed's opponents depicted him as hostile to labour, against provincehood, and an ineffective representative. Charles Alexander Magrath
Charles Alexander Magrath (April 22, 1860 – October 30, 1949) was a Canadian land surveyor and statesman. He conducted foundation surveys of the North-West Territories (NWT) from 1878 until 1885. He joined Sir Alexander Tilloch Galt and Elliott Torrance Galt in their western industrial enterprises as a surveyor, later becoming Elliott's assistant and Land Commissioner of the North Western Coal and Navigation Company. He was also the first mayor of Lethbridge, Alberta District, NWT, which has a major street ( Mayor Magrath Drive) named after him. Magrath was a member of the North-West Legislative Assembly from 1891 to 1898. He was appointed as a cabinet minister in the Frederick Haultain administration in 1897. William Frederick Meyers, (September 3, 1848 – 1912) was a Canadian politician. He served on the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories for Kinistino from 1891 to 1905. Kinistino is a town in Saskatchewan, Canada. Kinistino is situated in north-central Saskatchewan. It lies on rich agricultural soil in the valley of the Carrot River, which flows a mile east of the town. Kinistino is located northwest of Melfort on Highway 3 and southeast of Prince Albert. John Lineham
John Lineham (21 March 1857 – 21 April 1913) was a territorial-level politician and businessman from Northwest Territories, Canada. Lineham was born 21 March 1857 to Thomas Lineham and Barbara McIntyre in Mitchell, Upper Canada. He married Mary Elizabeth Martin in Collingwood, Ontario on 21 March 1894 and have two daughters. Lineham would head to Brandon, Manitoba and enter the cattle business, and later in 1883 he went to Calgary ahead of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Lineham purchased A. P. Samples' butcher shop with a partner and formed a successful meat business under the name "Dunn and Lineham", which would eventually be sold to William Roper Hull and later Patrick Burns.
