Duke Blue Devils Football Seasons
This is a list of seasons completed by the Duke Blue Devils football team. Representing Duke University, the Blue Devils compete in the Coastal Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference in the NCAA Division I FBS. Since 1929, Duke has played their home games out of Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham, North Carolina. The Blue Devils began playing football as an independent in 1888, though the school did not field a team from 1895 to 1919. In 1930, the program joined the Southern Conference, where they captured nine conference titles in 22 years. The Blue Devils joined the ACC as a charter member in 1953, and have competed in the conference ever since. Duke's primary rival is the North Carolina Tar Heels. The series dates back to 1888, and has been played annually since 1922. The teams compete for the Victory Bell. As of the 2018 season, North Carolina holds a 59–39–4 lead in the series. Tate Field
Tate Field, known as Island Park in the 1890s and Mayo Island Park prior to 1926, was a stadium located on Mayo Island in the James River within the city of Richmond, Virginia. It hosted sporting events including college football and Minor League Baseball. Tate Field served as the home field for the Richmond Colts of the Virginia League, Eastern League, and Piedmont League from 1921 to 1941 and the Richmond Spiders football team of the University of Richmond from 1925 to 1928. Victory Bell (Duke–North Carolina)
The Victory Bell is the traveling trophy given to the winner of the annual football game between the Duke University Blue Devils and the University of North Carolina Tar Heels. The game was worth two points in the now-defunct, yearlong Carlyle Cup between the two schools. History North Carolina and Duke first met in football in 1888, and the series has been renewed annually since 1922. In the fall of 1948, UNC Head Cheerleader Norman Sper along with Loring Jones of Duke, likely inspired by other traveling trophies in college football, came up with the idea for the Victory Bell. Jones designed the frame and Sper obtained an old railway bell from the Southern Railway. North Carolina won possession of the first-ever Victory Bell game with a 20–0 shutout victory at Kenan Memorial Stadium in 1948. There had been no football team since 1889 prior to this season. The team captains for the 1891 season were Michael Hoke and George Graham. William P. Graves has been reported as this team's coach, but he was the coach in the spring of 1891 when UNC was scheduled to play, but did not. UNC was leading in its contest with Wake Forest but forfeited before the game was over.
