1888 Calgary Municipal Election
The 1888 Calgary municipal election was held on January 3, 1888 to elect a Mayor and six Councillors to sit on the fourth Calgary Town Council from January 16, 1888 to January 21, 1889. The 1888 election was the first after the Town Council had expanded from four councillors to six councillors. Background Nominations for council opened on December 27, 1887 and E. P. Davis was named returning officer, and the town fire hall was selected as his headquarters. Former Mayors George Murdoch, George Clift King and Arthur Edwin Shelton were nominated for the position of mayor. A public meeting was called a 2 p.m. later in the day to give speeches, which became so pointed and personal that several of the Aldermanic candidates withdrew their nominations. Results Mayor Councillors Six councillors were elected in this election. Election was conducted using Plurality block voting. Each voter could cast up to six votes. Arthur Edwin Shelton
Arthur Edwin Shelton (August 15, 1853 – February 1, 1937) was the third mayor of the town of Calgary, Alberta. Shelton came to Calgary around 1884 running a furniture business on Stephen Avenue. He served as town councillor during the mayoral tenure of George Clift King from 1886 to 1888. Shelton was elected mayor in the 1888 election and served from January 16, 1888, to January 21, 1889. During his term, the Langevin Bridge was completed and the city begun construction of the waterworks system. After his mayoral term, he returned to operate his furniture business. However, his name disappears from city directories in 1890. James Delamere Lafferty (April 28, 1849 – July 29, 1920) was a Canadian physician and politician. Lafferty served as Registrar for the Northwest Territories Medical Ordinance regulator to professionalize the practice of medicine. he was actively involved in establishing the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta and the Canadian Medical Association's Alberta Division, which was later known as the Alberta Medical Association. James Reilly (Canadian Politician)
James Reilly (March 28, 1835 – July 9, 1909) was a Canadian businessman and politician. He was the sixth Mayor of Calgary, Alberta. Early life Reilly was born in 1835 in Napierville, Quebec to immigrant parents from Ireland. In Quebec he became an architect and builder before going to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1882, then to Calgary in 1883. In Calgary he became actively involved with the local community. He played a key part in organizing a citizens group concerned about the location of the railway station that was built in Calgary. While proprietor of the Royal Hotel, he organized the first civic committee meeting on January 4, 1884. This was the first step leading to Calgary's municipal incorporation later that year. Wesley Fletcher Orr (March 3, 1831 – February 16, 1898) was a Canadian businessman, journalist, and politician. He was the eighth mayor of the city of Calgary, Alberta. Orr was born in Lachute, Lower Canada on March 3, 1831 to Samuel G. P. Orr and Jane Hicks. He married Priscilla Victoria Miller circa 1863. Together they had two daughters and one son. Prior to moving to Calgary, Orr spent his life in various occupations. These include: cattle-dealer, salesman, teacher, and coroner. He also contributed to newspapers such as the Northern Gazette (Barrie, Ontario) and the Hamilton Spectator. In 1883, Orr was advised by D'Alton McCarthy to buy land at Fort Calgary prior to the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway. That year he purchased land south of the Bow River and east of the Elbow River with an associate, Mary S. Schreiber, for $10,000. Howard Douglas (May 8, 1850 – January 6, 1929) was a Superintendent for Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada, councillor for Calgary City Council. Early life Howard Douglas was born in Halton District, Ontario in 1850. He was the son of Thomas Douglas, a farmer, and the oldest of four boys. Howard Douglas spent his boyhood and youth in the east. He married Alice Maud Johnston, the daughter of a ship captain, in Burlington, Ontario on October 11, 1872. Around 1883 Douglas moved west to Manitoba, and later in fall 1883 he arrived in Calgary and worked as a construction bridge foreman for the Canadian Pacific Railway. In 1885, he resigned from railway service and established a cartage and coal business under the name of Calgary Cartage Company. Douglas was elected as a councillor in 1888 and again in 1891.
