1886 Ontario General Election
The 1886 Ontario general election was the sixth general election held in the Province of Ontario, Canada. It was held on December 28, 1886, to elect the 90 Members of the 6th Legislative Assembly of Ontario ("MLAs"). The election results were characterized a "crushing defeat for the Conservatives. The Ontario Liberal Party, led by Oliver Mowat, won a fifth consecutive term in government and an increased majority in the Legislature. The Ontario Conservative Party, led by William Ralph Meredith lost five of its seats. In Toronto, this and the next election (1890) were held under the Limited Vote system wherein Toronto voters had two votes for the three MPPs in their district. This allowed a degree of minority representation. Toronto (provincial Electoral District)
Toronto was an Ontario provincial electoral district that existed from 1886 to 1894. It was created by merging Toronto West and Toronto East ridings into one large riding covering the entire city. It was abolished prior to the 1894 election when it was split into four new ridings - Toronto North, Toronto South, Toronto East and Toronto West. The Toronto district elected three members. Grenville was a federal electoral district represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1904 to 1925. It was located in the province of Ontario. This riding was created in 1903 from parts of Grenville South and Leeds North and Grenville North ridings. It consisted of the county of Grenville. Leeds South
Leeds South was a federal electoral district (Canada), electoral district in Ontario, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1904. It was created by the British North America Act of 1867 which divided the County of Leeds into two Riding (division), ridings: a north riding and a south riding. The Leeds North and Grenville North, north riding was combined with the North Riding of the County of Grenville. The riding did not change its boundaries during its existence. Leeds North And Grenville North
Leeds North and Grenville North was a federal electoral district represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1904. It was located in the province of Ontario. It was created by the British North America Act of 1867 which allocated one member to the combined riding of the North Riding of Leeds and the North Riding of Grenville. In 1882, the North Riding of Leeds and Grenville was defined to consist of the townships of South Elmsley, Wolford, Oxford and South Gower, and the villages of Smith's Falls, Kemptville and Merrickville. The electoral district was abolished in 1903 when it was redistributed between Grenville and Leeds ridings. In 1934, parts of Grenville were merged with the riding of Dundas to form Grenville-Dundas. In 1977 it was further redistributed to form Carleton-Grenville. It was merged into Leeds-Grenville and Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry in 1987.
