Josef Christiaens
Josef Henri Charles Christiaens, sometimes spelt Joseph (16 June 1882 – 25 February 1919), was a Belgian engineer, racecar driver and aviator. Biography Christiaens was born in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode on 16 June 1882 to a prosperous Belgian family. On 13 August 1905 he participated in the ''Coupe de Liedekerke et Williame'' race held near Dinant, Belgium. The race spanned 102.740 km, but Josef failed to complete the race. He also failed to qualify for the ''Il Coupe de Normandie'' with his Vivinus 6 racecar on 29 August 1909. The Vivinus later gave Christiaens his first victory, winning the 2nd ''Coupe de Liedekerke et Williame'' in Ostend, Belgium on 13 September 1909. He went on to take a string of victories in Europe and in the US. On 9 September 1916 Josef and his English Sunbeam racecar, became the first foreigner to enter the Indianapolis Motor Speedway "Harvest Classic", composing of three races held at 20, 50 and 100- distances. Paul Anspach
Paul Eugène Albert Anspach (1 April 1882 – 28 August 1981) was a Belgian épée and foil fencer who competed in four consecutive Olympics (1908, 1912, 1920 and 1924). His grand-uncle, Jules Anspach (1829-1879), was Brussels burgomaster. Early life Paul Anspach began his athletic career as a football player. He was a member of the Anspach family. He died in his sleep in Brussels, Belgium on 28 August 1981. Fencing career Olympics Anspach was captain of the Belgian épée team from 1909 to 1928. At the 1908 Summer Olympics, he won a silver medal in the team épée event and placed 5th overall in individual épée. In the sabre competition, he was stopped in the 2nd round. At the 1912 Summer Olympics, he captured gold medals in both the individual and team épée competitions. In the individual event, he won 6 of his 7 matches. Georges Dandoy
Georges Dandoy (5 February 1882 in Hemptinne, Namur, Belgium – 11 June 1962 in Kolkata, India) was a Belgian Jesuit priest, missionary in India, theologian and Indologist. He is included in the so-called ‘Calcutta School of Indology’ (sometimes also known as the 'Bengal School'Udayan Namboodiry, ''St Xavier’s: The Making of a Calcutta Institution'' (New Delhi: Viking/Penguin Books India, 1995) 116). Eugène Joseph Delporte
Eugène Joseph Delporte (10 January 1882 – 19 October 1955) was a Belgian astronomer born in Genappe. He discovered a total of sixty-six asteroids. Notable discoveries include 1221 Amor (which lent its name to the Amor asteroids) and the Apollo asteroid 2101 Adonis. He discovered or co-discovered some comets as well, including periodic comet 57P/du Toit-Neujmin-Delporte. He worked in the Observatoire Royal de Belgique (Belgian Royal Observatory), situated in the town of Uccle (after which the asteroid 1276 Ucclia is named). He started there in 1903 after receiving his doctorate that year from the Free University of Brussels. The (French) or ( Dutch), meaning "Northern Passage", is a glazed shopping arcade in central Brussels, Belgium. It was built in 1881–82 in an eclectic style by Henri Rieck, following the covering of the Senne and the creation of the Central Boulevards. It is decorated with 32 caryatids in the neoclassical style by Jean-François-Joseph Bertheux and sculptures and putti by Constant Albert Desenfants.
