An exhibition game (also known as a friendly, a scrimmage, a demonstration, a preseason game, a warmup match, or a preparation match, depending at least in part on the sport) is a sporting event whose prize money and impact on the player's or the team's rankings is either zero or otherwise greatly reduced. In team sports, matches of this type are often used to help coaches and managers select and condition players for the competitive matches of a league season or tournament. James Lang (footballer)
James Joseph Lang (March 1851 – 14 July 1929) was a Scottish international footballer who represented Scotland twice from 1876 to 1878. Early life Lang was born in March 1851 in Scotland. Before his football career, he worked at the John Brown & Company's shipyard on the River Clyde in Glasgow, where he lost sight in one eye due to an accident in 1869. Football career Club career Lang's playing career started with Glasgow's Eastern, from where he moved to Clydesdale and then Third Lanark. While with Clydesdale he played in the first ever Scottish Cup final in 1874, losing 2–0 against Queen's Park. He also became involved with the Glasgow vs. Sheffield association matches, and at the 1876 meeting (in which Glasgow won 2–0) he caught the attention of The Wednesday board. John Ferguson (footballer, Born 1848)
John Ferguson (22 June 1848 – 6 September 1929) was a Scottish footballer who played for Vale of Leven and the Scottish national team, in the very early days of Scottish football in the 1870s. Previously a noted shinty player and sprinter, Ferguson joined Vale of Leven in 1872. He played as a forward for their great team which won the Scottish Cup three times in 1877, 1878 and 1879. In 1878, after doing so, they travelled down to England and beat Wanderers F.C., the FA Cup winners, 3-1. Although an important game in a way, the match was not advertised, and they had not decided beforehand whether to use the Scottish or English throw-in rule. He played for Scotland six times (three times each against England and Wales) and scored a total of five goals. Peter Campbell (Rangers Footballer)
Peter Campbell (late 1850s – January 1883) was a Scottish footballer, who was one of the four founding members of Rangers Football Club. He made 24 Scottish Cup appearances for Rangers and scored 15 goals. Club career Along with fellow founding members Peter McNeil, Moses McNeil and William McBeath, Campbell played in Rangers' first ever match against Callander F.C. at ''Flesher's Haugh'', Glasgow Green in 1872. He continued to play for Rangers until 1879, helping the club to the Scottish Cup finals of 1877 and 1879. He played briefly for English club Blackburn Rovers for the 1879–80 season before retiring from football. On 22 February 2010, Peter Campbell was inducted into the Rangers Hall of Fame. Billy MacKinnon
William Muir MacKinnon (18 January 1852 – 24 May 1942) was a Scottish footballer who played for Queen's Park and the Scotland national team in the 1870s. With Queen's Park, MacKinnon won the first three Scottish Cup competitions in 1874, 1875 and 1876 (being no relation of teammate Angus MacKinnon), as well as the first Glasgow Merchants Charity Cup in 1877. John McDougall (c. 1853 – 16 May 1925) was a Scottish footballer, who played for Scotland between 1877 and 1879. During his international career he played five matches, scoring four goals. He was the first player to score a hat-trick in an international game, scoring three goals for Scotland against England in a 7–2 win on 2 March 1878.
