The United States House of Representatives elections in California, 1872 was an election for California's delegation to the United States House of Representatives, which occurred as part of the United States House of Representatives elections, 1872, general election of the House of Representatives on November 5, 1872. California gained one seat as a result of the 1870 Census, which the Republicans won. The Democrats, however, gained a Republican-held district. The 43rd United States Congress was a meeting of the legislative branch of the United States federal government, consisting of the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives. Sherman Otis Houghton
Sherman Otis Houghton (April 10, 1828 – August 31, 1914) was an American politician from California. He also married, in succession, two survivors of the Donner Party. Biography Early life and education Houghton was born in New York City, on April 10, 1828. He completed preparatory studies and attended Collegiate Institute in New York. Career During the Mexican–American War, Houghton enlisted in the 1st Regiment of New York Volunteers, in June 1846. He arrived in San Francisco, California in 1847 with the rest of his regiment after sailing around Cape Horn. The regiment garrisoned Santa Barbara, before capturing the city of La Paz in Baja California. He was honorably discharged as a lieutenant at Monterey, California, in October 1848. Houghton then proceeded to mine for gold during the California Gold Rush, and after about six months of mining, he moved to San Jose and entered various commercial businesses. California's 4th Congressional District
California's 4th congressional district is a U.S. congressional district in California. Tom McClintock, a Republican, has represented the district since January 2009. Currently, the 4th district encompasses the Sierras from Truckee to the Sequoia National Forest, as well as a largely suburban area on the edge of the Sacramento Valley in southwestern Placer County. It consists of Alpine, Amador, Calaveras, El Dorado, Mariposa, and Tuolumne counties plus most of Placer County and portions of Fresno, Madera, and Nevada counties. Redistricting before the 2022 election shifted the district to the northwestern Sacramento Valley and Wine Country, including all of Lake County and Napa County, most of Yolo County, and parts of Solano County and Sonoma County.
