Austin Blair (February 8, 1818 – August 6, 1894), also known as the Civil War Governor, was a politician from the U.S. state of Michigan, serving as its 13th governor and in its House of Representatives and Senate as well as the U.S. Senate. He was known as a strong opponent of slavery and secession. He also led efforts to provide women and black citizens the right to vote. He simultaneously sought to ban capital punishment. Early life in New York Blair was born in Caroline, New York, in a log cabin built by his father George Blair of Scottish American, Scottish ancestry. It was reportedly the first cabin in Tompkins County, New York and Blair lived there until age 17, helping his father farm the land. He attended the common schools, Cazenovia College, Cazenovia Seminary and Hamilton College (New York), Hamilton College, before transferring to Union College in the middle of his junior year, graduating in 1839. Moses Wisner
Moses Wisner (June 3, 1815 – January 5, 1863) was the 12th governor of Michigan, a Colonel during the Civil War, and an active supporter of the anti-slavery movement. Early life in New York Wisner was born in Springport, New York, descendant from a family from Switzerland which emigrated to America in the early 1700s and settled in Orange County, New York. His father was Moses Wisner, a Colonel during the War of 1812, while his brother, George Washington Wisner, was one of the early founders of The Sun (New York City). One of Wisner's distant relatives is Henry Wisner, delegate from New York to the Continental Congress and major participant against the British in the American Revolution. He received an education in the common schools while working on his parents’ farm. In 1837, he moved to Michigan and settled on a farm in Lapeer County.
