	1857 Basilicata Earthquake The 1857 Basilicata earthquake (also known as the Great Neapolitan earthquake) occurred on December 16 in the Basilicata region of Italy southeast of the city of Naples. The epicentre was in Montemurro, on the western border of the modern province of Potenza. Several towns were destroyed, and there were around 11,000 fatalities according to official sources, but unofficial estimates suggest that as many as 19,000 died. At the time it was the third-largest known earthquake and has been estimated to have been of magnitude 7.0 on the moment magnitude scale. Earthquake The principal shock occurred at about 10:15 pm local time on December 16, 1857, with a duration of about 25 seconds. It was preceded by several foreshocks, the largest of which occurred about two minutes before the mainshock. 	Pertosa Pertosa is a village and ''comune'' of the province of Salerno in the Campania region of south-west Italy. In 2010 its population was 714. History Geography The village is situated in the eastern side of the province of Salerno, close to the municipalities of Auletta, Polla and Caggiano and to Alburni mountains. Its only hamlet (''frazione'') is the little village of Muraglione, in which are located the show caves. 	Marsico Nuovo Marsico Nuovo ( Lucano: ) is a town and ''comune'' of the province of Potenza in the Basilicata region of southern Italy. It was the seat of the bishops of Grumentum. It is an agricultural centre in the Agri river valley. History The city's origins are obscure, but, after the destruction by the Saracens of the ancient ''Grumentum'', the town grew in importance, and became the seat of a county under the Normans (11th century). Its most famous count was Sylvester of Marsico. It was subsequently ruled by the Hauteville, the Guarna and Sanseverino families. The last count from the latter, Ferrante Sanseverino, was exiled in 1552 and his fiefs acquired by the Kingdom of Naples.
