1841 Vermont Gubernatorial Election
The 1841 Vermont gubernatorial election was held on September 7, 1841. Incumbent Whig Governor Silas H. Jennison did not run for re-election. Whig nominee Charles Paine defeated Democratic nominee Nathan Smilie and Liberty nominee Titus Hutchinson. Since no candidate received a majority in the popular vote, Paine was elected by the Vermont General Assembly per the state constitution. Vermont Supreme Court
The Vermont Supreme Court is the highest judicial authority of the U.S. state of Vermont. Unlike most other states, the Vermont Supreme Court hears appeals directly from the trial courts, as Vermont has no intermediate appeals court. The Court consists of a chief justice and four associate justices; the Court mostly hears appeals of cases that have been decided by other courts. The Supreme Court justices are appointed by the Governor of Vermont with confirmation by the Vermont Senate. When a judicial vacancy occurs, the judicial nominating board submits to the governor the names of as many persons as it deems qualified for appointment. All Supreme Court justices come up for judicial retention, retention at the same time every six years. The next retention date is March 31, 2023. The Vermont Senate is the upper house of the Vermont General Assembly, the state legislature of the U.S. state of Vermont. The senate consists of 30 members. Senate districting divides the 30 members into three single-member districts, six two-member districts, three three-member districts, and one six-member district. 1835 Vermont Gubernatorial Election
The 1835 Vermont gubernatorial election was held on September 1, 1835. Incumbent Anti-Masonic governor William A. Palmer contested the election with Democratic nominee William Czar Bradley and Whig nominee Charles Paine. Since no candidate received a majority in the popular vote, the state constitution required the Vermont General Assembly and Vermont Executive Council to meet in joint convention and elect a governor. After 63 inconclusive ballots, the General Assembly adjourned on November 2 without making a choice. As a result, Silas H. Jennison, who had been elected Lieutenant Governor with Whig and Anti-Masonic support, served the term as acting governor. Charles Paine
Charles Paine (April 15, 1799 – July 6, 1853) was an American Whig politician, woolen mill owner, merchant, railroad builder, and the 15th governor of Vermont. Biography Paine was the son of Elijah Paine and Sarah (Porter) Paine, and was born in Williamstown, Vermont. He graduated from Harvard University in 1820, and became active in several business ventures. Though he never married, he had two children with Lorinda Stevens of Northfield. Career Paine moved to Northfield, Vermont in the early part of the nineteenth century to run the family woolen mill. He operated this business until it was destroyed by fire in 1848. Paine's Meeting House was built in 1835 for the mill's workers as a place for worship. It still functions as one today. He had various other business interests including a hotel and a store, but he is most often remembered as the individual who brought railroads to Vermont.
