Amalia Eriksson
Amalia Elisabeth Eriksson, née Lundström (25 November 1824 – 19 January 1923), was a Swedish businesswoman, known as the inventor of the ''Polkagris'', a type of candy stick known to have inspired the candy cane, which she invented in Gränna, Sweden. Life Amalia Eriksson was born in Jönköping, the daughter of farrier Jonas Lundström and maid Katarina Hagen Andersdotter in the year of 1824. When she was 10, she lost her parents and all her siblings to infectious diseases, including the cholera epidemic. Amalia started working as a maidservant, following her mother’s footsteps. In 1855, she moved to Brahegatan 2, Gränna in the company of the Röding sisters, the family she was working for, which later became a hotel named after Amalia. In 1857, she married tailor Anders Eriksson. After a year of marriage, Amalia gave birth to twins in September, where only one survived and the other was a stillborn. Carl Axel Arrhenius
Carl Axel Arrhenius (29 March 1757 – 20 November 1824) was an officer in the Swedish army as well as an amateur geologist and chemist. He is best known for his discovery of the mineral ytterbite (later called gadolinite) in 1787. The discovery of ytterbite was the first step in identifying an entire group of previously unknown elements, the rare earths. Eight stable rare earth elements were eventually extracted from ytterbite: terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, lutetium, and yttrium. Early life Arrhenius was born in Stockholm on 29 March 1757 to Jakob Larsson Arrhenius and Brita Sofia Georgii. In 1796 he married Gustafva von Bilang. Career Arrhenius became a lieutenant of the Svea Artillery Regiment of the Swedish army, the regiment being stationed in Vaxholm. Hans Henric Von Essen
Count Hans Henric von Essen (26 September 1755 – 28 June 1824) was a Swedish officer, courtier and statesman. Biography Hans Henric von Essen was born at Kavlås Castle in Tidaholm Municipality, Västra Götaland County, Sweden. He was a member of the Essen family. He was educated at Uppsala University. He entered the army, becoming a cornet at age 18. He accompanied Gustav III in his travels and campaigns. He accompanied Gustav III at the 1792 masquerade ball at the Royal Opera House in Stockholm on 16 March 1792, where the king was shot and mortally injured. Hans Henrik von Essen was credited with immediately ordering the doors to the ballroom to be locked, in order not to let the assassin getaway. Charlotta Norberg
Maria Charlotta "Charlotte" Norberg also known as ''Charlotte Törner'' (27 December 1824 in Stockholm – 25 February 1892 in Stockholm) was a Swedish Ballerina and ballet teacher. She was a star of the Royal Swedish Ballet in the mid 19th-century. Life Charlotte Norberg was born in Stockholm. In 1833, she was enrolled in the Royal Swedish Ballet at the Royal Swedish Opera as the student of Sophie Daguin at the age of nine. She made her debut as a solo dancer in 1834. In 1842, she made a success in the pantomime ballet ''Max och Emma'' by Sophie Daguin with music by A. F. Schwartz, and in ''La fille mal gardée'' by Jean Dauberval. Polkagris
Polkagris (plural: ''polkagrisar'') is a Swedish stick candy that was invented in 1859 by Amalia Eriksson in the town of Gränna, Sweden. It remains a well-known albeit old-fashioned candy in Sweden, often sold at fairs, Christmas markets, and the like. It is still closely associated with Gränna. The traditional polkagris candy stick is white and red, and is peppermint-flavoured. Genuine Polkagris has had a protected geographical indication since 21 July 2022 by EU and Livsmedelverket, which must therefore be manufactured in Gränna to be called genuine Polkagris. Etymology The name "polkagris" literally means "polka pig." "Polka" in the candy's name refers to a lively Slavic swirling dance, polka, which was still a novelty when the polkagris was invented. The dance originated in the middle of the 19th century and is still a common genre in Swedish folk dance and folk music. List Of Swedish Monarchs
This is a list of Swedish kings, queens, regents and viceroys of the Kalmar Union. History The earliest record of what is generally considered to be a Swedish king appears in Tacitus' work '' Germania'', c. 100 AD (the king of the Suiones). However, due to scant and unreliable sources before the 11th century, lists of succession traditionally start in the 10th century with king Olof Skötkonung, and his father Eric the Victorious, who also were the first Swedish kings to be baptized. There are, however, lists of Swedish pagan monarchs with far older dates, but in many cases these kings appear in sources of disputed historical reliability. These records notably deal with the legendary House of Yngling, and based on the Danish chronicler Saxo Grammaticus, Eric the Victorious and Olof Skötkonung have often been classified as belonging to the Swedish house of Ynglings, tracing them back to Sigurd Hring and Ragnar Lodbrok (whom Saxo considered to belong to the House of Yngling).
