The United States census of 1820 was the fourth census conducted in the United States. It was conducted on August 7, 1820. The 1820 census included six new states: Louisiana, Indiana, Mississippi, Illinois, Alabama and Maine. There has been a district wide loss of 1820 census records for Arkansas Territory, Missouri Territory and New Jersey. The total population was determined to be 9,638,453, of which 1,538,022 were slaves. The center of population was about 120 miles (193 km) west-northwest of Washington in Hardy County, Virginia (now in West Virginia). This was the first census in which any states recorded a population of over one million New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvaniaas well as the first in which a city recorded a population of over 100,000 New York. It was also the first census in which Baltimore was ranked as the country's second-most populous city. David Kidder
David Kidder (December 8, 1787 – November 1, 1860) was an American politician and a member of the United States House of Representatives from Maine. Kidder was born on December 8, 1787, in Pownalborough, Massachusetts (now known as Dresden, Maine). He pursued classical studies with private tutors, studied law, was admitted to the bar, and commenced practice in Bloomfield. He moved to Skowhegan in 1817, and then to Norridgewock in 1821. He was a prosecuting attorney of Somerset County from 1811 to 1823. Kidder was elected as an Adams-Clay Democratic-Republican to the Eighteenth Congress and re-elected as an Adams candidate to the Nineteenth Congress. He served from March 4, 1823, to March 3, 1827. He was not a candidate for renomination in 1826. He returned to Skowhegan in 1827 and returned to the practice of law. He was a member of the Maine House of Representatives in 1829. William Durkee Williamson
William Durkee Williamson (July 31, 1779 – May 27, 1846) was the second Governor of the U.S. state of Maine, and one of the first congressmen from Maine in the United States House of Representatives. He was a member of the Democratic-Republican Party. Williamson was also an early historian of Maine. Williamson’s legacy was to exonerate white society for its role in Native dispossession and to justify it by white supremacy. Early life Williamson was born on July 31, 1779, in Canterbury, Connecticut, and was named after his father's maternal grandfather and eldest brother, William Durkee. He was the oldest son born to George Williamson, who served in the Army during the Revolutionary War, and Mary (née Foster) Williamson. Jeremiah O'Brien (congressman)
Jeremiah O'Brien (January 21, 1778 – May 30, 1858) was a United States Representative from Maine. He was born in Machias, Massachusetts (now in Maine). He attended the common schools. He then engaged in lumber manufacturing and in shipping. He was elected as member of the Maine State Senate from 1821 to 1824. He was elected as an Adams-Clay Democratic-Republican to the Eighteenth Congress, and reelected as an Adams candidate to the Nineteenth, and Twentieth Congresses (March 4, 1823 – March 3, 1829). He served as chairman for the Committee on Expenditures for the United States Department of the Navy (Nineteenth Congress). He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1828 to the Twenty-first Congress. He was a member of the Maine State House of Representatives from 1832 to 1834. Enoch Lincoln (December 28, 1788 – October 8, 1829) was an American politician, serving as U.S. Representative from, successively, Massachusetts and from Maine. He was the son of Levi Lincoln Sr. and his wife, and the younger brother of Levi Lincoln Jr. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, Lincoln graduated from Harvard College in 1807. He was elected and served as Governor of Maine from 1827 until his death in October 1829. He studied law, was admitted to the bar, and started his practice in Salem in 1811. He studied medicine, became a doctor, and started a practice in Gardiner in Massachusetts' District of Maine.
