	1820 United States Census The United States census of 1820 was the fourth census conducted in the United States. It was conducted on August 7, 1820. The 1820 census included six new states: Louisiana, Indiana, Mississippi, Illinois, Alabama and Maine. There has been a district wide loss of 1820 census records for Arkansas Territory, Missouri Territory and New Jersey. The total population was determined to be 9,638,453, of which 1,538,022 were slaves. The center of population was about 120 miles (193 km) west-northwest of Washington in Hardy County, Virginia (now in West Virginia). This was the first census in which any states recorded a population of over one million New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvaniaas well as the first in which a city recorded a population of over 100,000 New York. He was an influential figure in the drafting of the Louisiana Civil Code of 1825, a civil code based largely on the Napoleonic Code. 	Henry Hosford Gurley Henry Hosford Gurley (May 20, 1788 – March 16, 1833) was a member of the U. S. House of Representatives representing the state of Louisiana. He served four terms in three parties. Gurley was born in Lebanon, Connecticut, and attended Williams College. He was first elected to Congress as an Adams-Clay Republican, then served two terms as an Adams candidate, and finally served one term as an anti-Jacksonian. A collection of Gurley's papers between 1815 and 1831 is located in the Tulane University Special Collections. Gurley served as a district judge in Louisiana following his term in Congress. 	William Leigh Brent William Leigh Brent— (February 20, 1784July 7, 1848) was a lawyer and plantation owner in Maryland and Louisiana, and three-term U.S. Representative representing Louisiana's 3rd congressional district. Early and family life Brent was born at Port Tobacco, Charles County, Maryland, on February 20, 1784, the first child of Robert Brent (1759–1810) and Dorothy Leigh Brent. His father's family (including lawyer/nun Margaret Brent) had owned land in that area of Maryland since about 1640, but some had fled to Virginia before the American Revolutionary War.
