1820 United States Census
The United States census of 1820 was the fourth census conducted in the United States. It was conducted on August 7, 1820. The 1820 census included six new states: Louisiana, Indiana, Mississippi, Illinois, Alabama and Maine. There has been a district wide loss of 1820 census records for Arkansas Territory, Missouri Territory and New Jersey. The total population was determined to be 9,638,453, of which 1,538,022 were slaves. The center of population was about 120 miles (193 km) west-northwest of Washington in Hardy County, Virginia (now in West Virginia). This was the first census in which any states recorded a population of over one million New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvaniaas well as the first in which a city recorded a population of over 100,000 New York. It was also the first census in which Baltimore was ranked as the country's second-most populous city. Philip Thompson (August 20, 1789 – November 25, 1836) was a member of the U.S. representative from Kentucky. Born in Mercer County, near Harrodsburg, Kentucky, Thompson received a limited education. Francis Johnson (June 19, 1776 – May 16, 1842) was a U.S. Representative from Kentucky. Born in Caroline County, Virginia, Johnson pursued preparatory studies. He studied law. He was admitted to the bar and practiced. He owned slaves. He moved to Woodford County, Kentucky, in 1796 and to Bowling Green in 1807. He served as member of the State house of representatives in 1812, 1813, and 1815. Johnson was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the Sixteenth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of David Walker and reelected to the Seventeenth Congress. Johnson was elected as an Adams-Clay Republican to the Eighteenth Congress and as an Adams candidate to the Nineteenth Congress and served from November 13, 1820, to March 3, 1827. Nathan Gaither
Nathan Gaither (September 15, 1788 – August 12, 1862) was a U.S. Representative from Kentucky. Born near Mocksville, North Carolina, Gaither completed preparatory studies. He attended Bardstown College. He studied medicine. He was graduated from Jefferson Medical College and began practice in Columbia, Kentucky. He served as assistant surgeon in the War of 1812. He served as member of the State house of representatives 1815–1818. Gaither was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-first and Twenty-second Congresses (March 4, 1829 – March 3, 1833). He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection 1832 to the Twenty-third Congress. He served as delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1849. He was again a member of the State house of representatives 1855–1857. He resumed the practice of medicine. He died in Columbia, Kentucky, August 12, 1862. He was interred in Columbia Cemetery. Richard Aylett Buckner (February 5, 1784 – December 8, 1847) was a lawyer and farmer who served United States representative from Kentucky as well as Surveyor-General of Kentucky and Kentucky judge of the 18th judicial district. He may be best known as the father of Aylette Buckner who also served a Representative from Kentucky, or as the eldest of three American judges of the same name. Another of the judges was his son Richard Aylett Buckner (1810-1900), who helped keep Kentucky in the Union, or his grandson Richard Aylett Buckner (1849-) who became an Arkensas state senator.
